Savannah: Cohen’s Retreat

I had the great pleasure of whiling away some time yesterday with Mother over at Cohen’s Retreat.  She has been carrying on about this place since attending their grand opening in February.  I couldn’t really grasp what it was… and I’m still not entirely sure… but despite all that I have added it to my delightful Savannah must-do list!

The stately 1930’s Skidaway Road manse was originally Cohen’s Old Men’s Retreat – a home for elderly men.   The building closed its doors in 1996 and eventually fell into disrepair.

Colleen Smith and Karen Langston of Savannah Plush have masterfully returned Cohen’s to its original splendor and have established the space as a celebration of art, food and community. Cohen’s Retreat is now home to some of the most creative retails spaces I’ve ever had the pleasure of shopping, a fine eatery and cafe, commercial tenants, residential cottages, event venue and an “Art Tank” for classes, workshops and lectures.  The atmosphere at Cohen’s is literally electric.  The energy and creativity is palpable as you enter through the gracious double doors that have seen decades of history and transition.

There are a a handful of gorgeous and inviting dining spaces.  Cohen’s Retreat is currently open for lunch.  Mother and I both had the heirloom tomato caprese salad and it was mouth watering.  She has lunched here a few times and assured me that there is not a bad option on the menu!

After lunch, we wandered through the retail spaces.  Each one was different and masterfully done.  Mother said that they update them frequently and that there is always something new to see.  We thought the prices were quite reasonable as well.

Keep an eye on the Cohen’s Retreat facebook page because they have already hosted a number of events that sound right up my alley.  And, they will start plating dinner next month.  That will be in spot A1a of my must-do list for our next visit!!

  1. Wow! What a treasure! I love it when old buildings are saved and brought back to life. It looks beautiful and I saw many items I would love to have. The paintings are beautiful especially the one of the person standing on the beach. I will check out their Facebook page! Thanks for sharing!
