Y’all just might have heard that tomorrow is International Can-It-Forward Day! Hosted by Bravo’s Top Chef judge and Atlanta restaurateur Hugh Acheson, Can-It-Forward Day celebrates home canning via a live webcast on www.freshpreserving.com and will be exploring all sorts of fun and unique uses for the Ball jars we know and love down South. I mean, I can’t remember Daddy-O drinking out of anything but a Ball jar for at least half of my life.
International Can-It-Forward Day
In celebration of International Can-It-Forward Day, Ball reached out to little old me to find out my favorite ways to use the jars. Without a moment’s hesitation, I knew I had to share the most common ways that I use the Ball jar – for drinkin’, eatin’ and holdin’ a big bunch of blooms!! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the The limited edition Spring Green Heritage Collection Jars commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Ball brothers’ “Perfection” Jar.

With a new neighbor popping by for a glass of sweet tea on the porch, I was excited to pull out the Spring Green jars – using the larger quart size for my bouquet of sunflowers and hydrangeas and the pint size for our minted sweet teas.

Add a plate of tomato crostini with whipped feta and it just doesn’t get easier – or more Southern – than this!

Hold that thought – I think it might actually be possible to get more Southern! And that’s where our family’s favorite Ball BBQ Sundae comes in to play. Hold on to your hats y’all… this is one yummy meal and hands down my favorite use for the mason jar!! I used the clear jar here because the green just didn’t do the contents justice.

  2. There are so many great uses for Ball jars. Drinks, flowers, candles. My brother and sister-in-law had a beach wedding and used the aqua Ball jars for the reception centerpieces. They were so lovely. I have a few that I keep in my laundry room. I use them to collect coins, coke pop tabs (for Ronald McDonald house) and buttons. I follow your blog on feedly.

  3. Love Ball jars! On the not so glamorous side I use them to store left over paint. Easy to find the wall color I need for touch ups and cute on the shelf!

  6. We use Ball jars every day (that are kept in the freezer) for drinking teas and water, juices and lemonade, Coke…you name it! There's just something about the way it tastes so pure.

Growing up in Indiana, my grandmother and aunt always used them for canning and they were just the right size for little childhood bouquets.

On summer nights, they became home to a few fireflies we would so proudly cup in our hands. Before we would start, a nail was used to hammer holes in the lid and we soon added twigs and bits of grass to the magical glow. We would later make a wish and then release them before going inside.

Ball jars endure not just for their functionality but for such good old fashioned memories of a simpler time.

  7. I love layering tossed salad in mason jars. I make a weeks worth and they stay fresh & crisp. Such a time saver too!

  8. Too, too many beloved uses to choose a favorite!! Currently just in one room I have flowers in one jar, sweet tea in another, and hubby even has screws in one. Used one to make salad dressing this evening and am canning pepper jelly tomorrow :). But I think my very favorite……catching lightning bugs in them as a child.

  9. As others have noted, I love to us mine for drinking glasses, obviously canning/preserving, vases, and also to store lemon slices in the fridge to always have them available for iced tea and water. Oh, and I use them for storing sugar and creamer at my coffee station.

  10. Oops…that's me up there, chatting about fireflies, just under my other comment….forgot to add my name. :)

This is such a cute discussion!

Both grandchildren (one girl, one boy) both play baseball and actually went to Six Flags same day you and your boys did! One son-in-law is GA Tech grad and actually going to grad school there. Yes, hundreds of functional ball jar uses but the most obvious is …. just to look at! 27. Wow, it is so tough to come up with just one "favorite" so I'll pick two. Absolutely love Ball jars for fresh cut flowers — seriously, even a weed would look good in one of those pretties; my next most fave is using them in my craft-sewing room to hold too many things to list. I'm also dying to try one of the many "desserts in a jar" that I've seen floating around Blogland. Thanks so much, Amanda, for the chance to win such a wonderful give-away!

  28. Favorite summertime use for ball jars is to set LED candles in the jars making handles with wire wrapped around jar mouth then gang from shepherds hooks placing several around back yard then enjoy watching stars at night or if using for a party you can pre-set the candles timed to come on at dark and set to turn off at end of party saving party planning and cleanup time. I am a crafter, so beyond the normal use for the jars, vases, cups, canning, I have used them in a different way.
I fill the bottom up with fake snow, a few colorful Christmas balls then put a small votive cup that sits and covers the opening with a votive candle init. I wrap, fabric, ribbon or twine around the top. These have always been a great gift for teachers and family.

  48. Eton mess in a jar…. Perfect for picnics
Eton mess is a traditional summer treat thought to have been invented by the boys at Eton. This is how I make it to go in a jar: firstly take a bag of frozen summer berries add 1/2 cup sugar and simmer until slightly thickened and syrup like then in a separate bowl whisk together 1 cup of heavy cream and 1cup of creme fraiche . Start layering the fruit cream fruit cream fruit in a jar then sprinkle crushed meringues onto the top. They travel well and taste delicious.

  49. I love Ball jars and use them for so many things around the house. My favorite thing this summer is Cake in a Jar.
