Bloody Delish

First, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your kind words and encouragement yesterday.  You brought me to tears, filled my heart, replenished my spirit and encouraged me to press forward.  I wish I could give each and every one of you a big real life HUG!

I set up an impromptu little Bloody Mary cocktail hour for Honey and I last week.  Why?  I have no idea.  I guess because it was Friday and I hadn’t left my chair for three days (ankle-gate 2.0) and a storm was brewing and I’m constantly stressing out over one of my littles and I just darn well felt like it.  (If you’re wondering, Honey didn’t even ask how it was that I “can’t” make din din but I can set up a cocktail bar.)

I use my favorite-always-on-hand Zing Zang mix as the base, but That Southern Chick has a worth-your-while from scratch recipe that’s every bit as amazing!!  In fact, she was the original inspiration for the kettle chip topper too.  That gal knows her way around the bloody.

For my little bar, I set out celery, salt and vinegar kettle chips, turkey pepperoni and pickled okra.  (You might notice the lack of olives… I abhor them.)  Oh, and I topped my skewers with a little washi flag, just for kicks.  Fill your glass to the tippy top with ice, add your mix, vodka, and a twist of lime and then go to town on the toppers.  I mean, who doesn’t love a fru fru looking cocktail?!

My glass came with my General Mills Movie Night package, but That Southern Chick has you covered there as well.  I’ve used the one she did for me with a Lilly initial all.summer.long.  I have had the chalkboard for ages but recently just picked up a second at Michael’s after looking for it for two years.

I’d love for you to join in on the Bloody Mary wars!!!  *hint hint bestie R*  Leave a comment with YOUR favorite way to make it bloody delish!!

xoxo

  1. What a fun idea! Sometimes you just need a little fun :). I, too, love Zing Zang, along with pickled okra, extra horseradish, and olives (sorry). (Sidenote: Hubby had never had okra until I made him one, if you can believe that.) I do think I'm going to have to try the chip. Thanks for the tip!

  2. Amanda, I read your previous blog last night before I went to bed but I was on my tablet and I hate to type on it so I waited until this morning to tell you that my heart goes out to you. When we are physically "down" it is harder to deal with other things in our lives. I will be praying for you to have wisdom and discernment as you deal with this pain that is consuming you. As a 59 year old mother of three and grandmother of five, I can assure you that when your children hurt, you feel the pain, no matter their age. I know you are a woman of faith and I pray that God's peace will be with you as you navigate these rough waters. Prayers for you are going up!!

  3. Okay, this one just might have me crying. I sadly can no longer drink them since finding out about my tomato sensitivity/allergy!! It just kills me every time I see one. However, there may be hope as my doctor informed me just last week that after a year of forgoing so many things, I may be able to add them back in gradual and in very limited quantities to see how I react to them. Fingers crossed I can handle at least one bloody mary per season! LOL

  4. Your bloody mary bar looks fab – and who needs an excuse for a cocktail anyway?! I think the bloody may be the only cocktail I've never imbibed. No time like the present, right? Sounds like a perfect way to start our weekend… if only we didn't have baseball practice Friday night. xo

  5. those look soooo delish! i'm not much on bloody mary's but when i do order one i like the ones at Wintzells….they are really good!

hope you and your sweet boy are doing a bit better this morning….lots of prayers going up for ya'll!

  6. What a fun idea! So festive and special! My daughter identifies with you so stressing about her kindergartener….I hope you discuss this with the teacher….I worry also that precious little ones are so stressed at such a young age….my prayer is that their days are happy and healthy! Blessings to you and your precious family!

  7. Our favorite is Whiskey Willy's Bloody Mary Mix. I love his pickled beans too! I try "others" when we travel but always come back to Willy's. It originated in Orange Beach, AL. I am sure you have seen it when you visit the Gulf Coast!!

My heart is heavy for you. There is no worse pain when your child is hurting. I have a child that has many challenges and other parents just don't seem to understand. You and Honey are great parents and you will work through this.

  8. Hi Amanda,
I love your blog and love hearing about your children too. I'm so sorry one of them is hurting that is the worst thing a parent can feel. Hope it all turns out well. You deserve a little cocktail time. Bloody Mary's are my favorite and everyone says mine are the best. I also use the Zing Zang but them I use a recipe from the Dallas Dish cookbook, they are fantastic. Look for that cookbook online I bet you would enjoy it,
    Take care,
    Dawn R.

  9. You had me when you said you hate olives. I thought I was the only one. On a serious note, my prayers are with you and your family. My heart breaks when I hear of your concern for your little. I hope the troubles will soon be over and that God will give you strength and His peace in the meantime.

  10. Prayers for you, your little man, and your family. As a teacher, I've seen first hand what can and does go on in school- and at such a young age!
Also, those Bloodies look delish- you'll have to try the four new variations at the Dawa Bar at Animal Kingdom when you're here!

  11. Love your cute cocktail bar. I've never tried a Bloody Mary so I'd love to give it a try. So sorry about your little guys school issue. They're the worst. I hope everything resolves really soon.

  12. Who said you didn't fix din din? I saw veggies, protein and a starch in the glass, a complete meal! I don't care for Bloody Mary's but your's sure looks tasty. I'm glad you were able to enjoy!

  13. For a fabulous Bloody Mary, use gin instead of vodka! You will be surprised how smoothly it blends with the other ingredients!

Parenthood is tough . . . and there is no guarantee that it will grow easier as your children age . . . My thoughts and prayers are with you . . .

  14. I went to send you an email today and realized that you come through as a no-reply blogger. When you get a chance shoot me your email addy and I will get you off a "school note" in the next day or so.

This was a great post- Yum…now I am hungry and it is almost midnight here. lol xo Diana

  15. I love a Bloody Mary with brunch on the weekends! I call it "salad in a glass." Zing Zang is a favorite, but I like Charleston Mix too – from right here in South Carolina! Glad you use pickled okra. Try a boiled shrimp too.
My heart broke hearing about your sweet boy's school issues. Praying for y'all. When our angels are hurting, we hurt even more as their parents.

  16. I am a Zing Zang fan to but I prefer to strain it because I hate the bits and pieces at the bottom. I also add a dash of worchestershire and a small amount of horseradish….. My fave morning drink on the beach! xo

  17. Amanda, I ran into your parents tonight at Sundae Cafe! I felt like It was a celebrity siting and told them I wanted to take a selfie. :)They were a huge delight and I told them it made my week! Hope you are having a great day!

  18. I was reading kendall Boggs' blog and she cooks a strip of bacon for her bloodies. I thought you may be interested since I recalled this post.

  19. Love it, beautiful as usual!

I like to use Absolute Peppar and low sodium V8 (I'm a health nut) with a tall stalk of celery for mixing! Sometimes I enjoy a Bloody Maria…sub Tequila for the Vodka :)

  20. I too love the Zing Zang – I think it is the best mix. We also rim our glasses with a mixture of spices. We add two strips of thick bacon that we cooked on a cookie sheet in the over (so it stays flat), pickled green beans (something we fell in love with when we lived in Alaska), a stick of cubed cheese and olives. Yummo!

  21. Wow, that looks delish! You know, most people would just make a drink and call it good but you make it a special event and I love it!

I'm not familiar with Zing Zang but I'm sure it's tasty.

    xo
    Pat

  22. I lace bamboo skewers to make kebabs for my Bloody Marys… I use all sorts of veggies, cubed cheeses, and include either shrimp or pepperoni. It’s a meal unto itself!

I also rim the glasses a spice mix, heavy on the celery salt.
