God Bless America

As a young adult that stood by in horror in a work conference room, crowded yet alone, as the unfathomable events of 9/11/01 unfolded, I find it hard to believe that fourteen years have passed.  Fourteen years.  It seems like yesterday and a lifetime ago.  It was one of the darkest hours I have ever known.  I feel so wholly blessed and fortunate for all of the things I’ve been able to do in those years.

Get married.

Have children.

Buy a home.

And another one.

Grow my career.

Build a blog.

Travel.

Celebrate.

Live.

And, at the same time, I am so deeply saddened for the innocent husbands, wives, children, siblings, loved ones and friends that lost their lives, and the chance to do all of the things they had dreamed.  It is all so senseless.  I fall to my knees with gratefulness for the heroes and helpers that day and in the days, weeks and years that followed.  I pray for the many Americans that continue to sacrifice and serve our country in hopes that we never have to see such atrocities again.

God bless America, today and every day.

xoxo

  1. Very well said, Amanda. I hate having to (try to) explain this to my boys . At the same time, it’s so important that they know freedom isn’t free. I am saddened and sobered each year. And thankful.

    God Bless America! xo

  2. Hi Amanda, I agree that the 9/11 attacks were senseless. Just as equally senseless of killing 45000+ civilians in Kashmir . My heart breaks because of the apathy in not doing anything by the government or UN. No matter what in the end, its innocent people being killed.

  3. Amanda,
I remember like yesterday – my oldest then in sixth grade and my youngest in 2nd. Both already at school. I was getting ready to go up to the elementary to coordinate 40 moms on a huge book project for our library. We kept the project scheduled and it helped to be together – all of us being stay at home moms at the time would have been probably alone in our homes. So we listened by radio and received updates from our school secretary. One mom had a s-in-law that worked in one of the towers…we cried, prayed and buried ourselves in thousands of books.

I will never forget the looks on our teachers and staffs faces. I did not want to leave when we were done so I walked the halls. I do not know how our teachers all pulled it together that day. Looking back they were heroes too. Every day we send our children to school and trust that they are in a safe environment. No one could guarantee that…but our teachers did what they do best – kept the environment calm and with normalcy the best they could even though each of them was hurting inside.

I remember my sixth grader getting off the bus – the boys were in different schools so I was relieved to have time alone with him. I greeted him outside and as he walked up our driveway within a few steps was sobbing. The school had chosen to have a lot of dialogue with the kids that day and TV’s on. He was so overwhelmed – first week of school and not in an elementary school environment. It was one of the most challenging times in my life in comforting one of my children.

Our lives have all changed since 9/11but as Americans we continue to unite and stand strong. The firemen, policemen, everyday folks helping each other the list could go on we have so many heroes. I pray for those we lost and for the strength of our country.

Thank you for your wonderful post today.

  4. My daughter was yet to be born when 911 happened and we have never talked much about it because I felt she was too young. But this year I felt the need to share with her that day and why it’s important even though it is sad and even disturbing. I want her to know, to never forget that freedom isn’t free. Our soldiers pay for our freedom everyday, as do their wives and children. Sometimes with their lives. I also want her to know how blessed we are that we don’t have fighting on US SOIL as so many children around the world live in fear daily and how thankful we should be to live in this country with all its flaws it’s a blessing to be an American.
