Living Wax Museum

I had the immense pleasure of attending one of my favorite school activities yet… the 4th Grade Living Wax Museum!

I headed to the classroom a little early to assist with last minute costume malfunctions and rehearsals.  The kids were absolutely electric.  They were so excited to show off their hard work.

Each student got to pick a historical figure that they had learned about in school.  John chose Paul Revere.  90% of the project was prepared at school, with the students completing all of their own research for their tri-fold display boards AND their oral presentation in class.   John brought it all home on a thumb drive and we just had to print and affix it to his display.  I can see that we are already turning the corner on projects that are for the “family” versus projects completed by the students.  I love the way his teacher handled the transition this year – the first few required heavy parental involvement but were great for teaching him how to manage a project.  And look at him now :-)

The displays were set up in the cafeteria and family and other students were invited to tour the museum.  Each child started out sitting very still in front of his board.  When you pressed the “button” on their right hand, they came to life with a short oral speech about themselves.  It was all presented in first person and was fascinating and interesting.  Every single one of them did an incredible job!!  I noticed that the other students that were touring had forms they were filling out about the exhibits they tried – very engaging and educational way to learn about American history!  I think my social studies and history teachers were seriously lacking throughout my entire schooling… I hated history with a passion and found it so boring and dull.  I’ve learned so much more via my boys than I ever did in school.  It just goes to show how far amazing teachers can go.

I cannot believe this kid is a rising fifth grader.  And that my baby is headed to second grade.  These are the days!

PS. The costume does come with a hat, but we had already borrowed one similar to the one linked that is much nicer.

  1. John, you and your display look fantastic! Congratulations on all of your success this year! Onward to fifth grade. Wow! This time next year, you’ll be halfway through so enjoy every minute. Wait. You’re a kid…you already do! :-) You are going to go very far in this world. Be proud of yourself and have a super summer!

  2. Our girls participated in an event just like that when they were in school. And they also did an immigration project that was fascinating. I too was not a fan of history class!!

  3. John makes an awesome Paul Revere! What a clever project. There are alot of things I miss about my boys being little, but the “family” projects are not one of them. I’ll never forget the time my baby came home (3rd grade) with a project for families…on Georgia history. There was an entire “how to” section for parents. I remember thinking, “We better get an A+ on this project…and we did.” We ended up actually having a good time with it. :) Way to go John! You look fabulous!

  4. My daughter was Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis in a pink suit, pillbox, pears and huge sunglasses… I am not sure who enjoyed this project more… Her or me! I love the living museum! Wonderful learning experience at our school!
