Surfing with Hot Sushi

When I sat down with the boys this spring to agree on what one camp they would attend this summer, John was extremely eager to do a surfing camp down in Savannah.  I really questioned how good a surf camp would be at Tybee beach or even if I’d be able to find one at all when my shout out to my home town friends for help came up with absolutely no recommendations.  I took to the internet and Hot Sushi immediately captured my attention – his enthusiasm for the sport, happy demeanor, and extremely positive and engaging website and facebook page were contagious.

We rode our bikes to the 17th street walk over on Monday morning and knew we had found the right place as soon as our eyes set sight on this!  Doesn’t that just make you smile?!

John was thrilled to run down the beach and find the boards waiting.

And I just continued to be intrigued by this cheerful and quirky man.  He played music, danced on the beach, and gave hugs and high fives to all that crossed his path.  Everyone seemed to know him!

John did so well in improving his skills over the week and truly had the best time.  It felt SO good to leave every day with a huge smile on his face and excitement to come back!

The little boys were at nature camp, so Sister, CeeCee and I loved playing on the beach during John’s surf camp!

The kids took a break mid-morning to dive into the baskets of boiled peanuts, fruit and drinks that Sushi carried down for them.  I mean, how FUN!  And then, every single day of camp ended with Sushi chopping up a delicious yellow watermelon right there in the sand!!!!!!!!!!!!

John left Savannah with so many fond memories of Hot Sushi’s Happy Surf Camp.  He is already talking about next summer and REALLY wants to perfect his skills enough to “one day” be one of Sushi’s helpers.

I truly cannot say enough good things about surfing with Sushi.  He made ME even want to get out there!!  He offers lessons and still has camps going on for a few more weeks this summer.  If you go, tell him we said aloha!!!!!!!

  1. What fun! Sometimes it is the craziest, fun loving, just passionate about what I do kinda people who make the best teachers!!! No judgement!!! AMEN!
Glad he had a great time.

  2. Very cool! John must have loved sharing his Hawaiian experiences with Sushi. :-) I think his cracking open a watermelon tradition is a fabulous touch that his students will always remember. Just wonderful!

  3. How fun! I had no idea something like this existed at Tybee! John, you look every inch the surfer – what a great idea for camp!

  4. We camped with Hot Sushi this summer also and love him! Our day started with a gator in the water?. Not a problem when Sushi is your guide. He entertained and chaperoned the kids until the gator was relocated and the kids loved him. I highly recommend his camp or single day instruction.

    1. Oh.My.Goodness – I thought gators were only in fresh water!!!!!!!!!!! Mother just told me that they were found at Tybee too this summer!

  5. We, too, LOVE Sushi’s surf camp! Our family got to experience surfing with Sushi in June, we came back for a second week in July!!!! Thank you for writing about this!
