A is for Apple After School Snack

One of my favorite traditions is to have a special snack waiting on the littles after their first day back to school.  I first did this five years ago when John started Kindergarten.  I was so weepy and nervous and it gave me something to do while I missed him.  Little did I know at the time that HE would feel so very special and that it would provide a great reason to slow down and talk after coming home.

After finding this darling apple garland in the Target dollar spot (it was actually $3!), I knew then and there that it would be the theme for this year’s snack.  The graph paper garland was in the same section as well.  I hung them up on a chalkboard brought up from the basement for a cute background for our snack.

The food was really simple but ended up being a HUGE hit with the littles!  They have already asked to do it again today.

I bought a bag of sliced apples and cut the tips off of each one to slide in lollipop sticks (Michael’s).  I had chocolate and caramel dipping sauces (try to find the thickest ones possible) and a variety of toppings to dip them in.

I went through my baking cabinet and was excited to see that I had most of these already on hand: graham cracker crumbs (crushed my own), sprinkles, crushed peanuts, heath bar bits, mini marshmallows and mini chocolate chips.

We had a lot of fun coming up with different creations!

I filled mason jars with apple juice and used two cute straws I found at Home Goods.

Another one of my very favorite first day of school activities is to play a game I made up a couple of years ago – After School Talk.  Using a deck of cards, your littles take turn drawing.  Based on what they get they have to tell something about their day.  For example, a 2 means you have to tell something about your teacher.  A 4 means a story about a new friend.  It is the BEST way to get information out of my otherwise tight lipped boys :-)  I love hearing about their day!!!!

Both boys had fantastic days!  Whit said his teacher is reaaaaally nice, but can be strict when she needs to.  He said his classroom has all the Harry Potter books and is very clean.  John said his teacher is also extremely nice and that he was most excited about Ellis Island and going on the 5th grade trip at the end of the year.

I think we’ll have round two of apple dippers and after school talk today!!

For those of you that have started school, I hope it’s off to a fabulous beginning!
