Musings

It’s been a month since my last roundup of random musings.  So buckle up… it’s going to be a scatterbrained ride.

If you’ll remember, back in 3rd grade John was elected by his classmates for student council but his awful teacher said he was “too bad” to get the position.  (I try not to remember anything about those awful few months).  Anyhoo, I was SO proud of him for going for it again in 4th grade, even though he didn’t win.  Well, the third times the charm and John finally landed the position in 5th grade!  We worked on his speech together but his poster was completely 100% his idea.  I tell you, 5th graders (at least mine) have A LOT of interest in this election and A LOT of opinions on which candidate they would vote for.  We worked on his speech together and I encouraged him to end with a solid, memorable line that would secure the vote.  He argued that “Vote for John” was sufficient and I let it go.  I got quite a big laugh out of the fact that when he came home from school that day he admitted that maybe I was right about the closing to his speech so, on the fly, he ended with “Vote John and Make 5th Grade Great Again.”  hahahahahaha.

We have had 2 season tickets to Georgia Tech football for 22 years now.  Gulp.  We’ve considered adding 2 more a few times since the boys were born, but in reality it is hard for all 4 of us to get to the games in the fall.  We sit next to Sister and her family so there is usually at least one game where we swap tickets so we can all 4 go.  Well, this one happened to conflict with John’s first lacrosse game and he was vehemently opposed to missing.  (My team NEEDS me….  I made a commitment…  Don’t start something you aren’t going to finish….  you get the drill.)  So, we secured him a ride and took the baby.  I always love being back on campus.  It’s got such a vitality about it.  Anyway, we checked in on the SAE and ZTA houses and had a fabulous time cheering on the Yellow Jackets to a big W.

Here’s a totally random tid bit for you.  If you have a bottle that’s opening prevents you drying it out inside, roll up a paper towel so that it’s long enough to both touch the bottom and poke out of the top.  Leave it over night and the towel will absorb all of the liquid droplets and dry it completely!

The baby had a rough start to school this year.  In hindsight, I think he usually does.  He is very quiet and has a very small circle of friends (think Jay Bird and 2 more).  He was struggling with the responsibility of things like bringing his homework home and also regretted putting baseball on pause to try lacrosse.  We’re now quite a ways into the year and things are looking up on all fronts.  We write reminders in his folder of things he needs to do, he’s made one little friend in his class, and he enjoyed his first lax game.  Through it all, I realized that he needed more 1:1 time with me and Honey and I made it a point to figure out ways to take him on quick little dates.  Just to talk, hear his worries and let him know how much we love him.  Most of those dates looked a lot like this….

Now, speaking of food, I’ve hit up some Atlanta faves over the last month.  First, Flip Burger Boutique.  Mmmm…..  The Southern Burger with sweet potato tots (and burnt marshmallow cream) and a Krispy Kreme milkshake.  Go ahead and roll me out of there.

Next up was Star Provisions.  Everything here is divine.  If you go, don’t leave without dessert.  I went with the butternut and caramelized onion tart and caramel bar.

When Honey and John were at the last GT game, Whit and I headed with bestie M to get sno cones.  Y’all… I used to love this little sno cone stand in Rosemary Beach and these are the closest I’ve ever had to them.  SOOOOO good.  The chain is called Bahama Buck’s and I REALLY wish there was one in my neck of the woods.

I buy most all of my Lilly on sale but totally splurged on the full priced Kassia Fit and Flare Dress.  Mostly because I was sorely lacking in the work wardrobe.  This dress fits SO well and is SO flattering.  I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it in more patterns if they are released.

I picked these two up in the sale and have managed to squeeze in a few wears before they look totally redic at the end of Sept… even though it’s still SO hot here!

I hate to end on a sad note, but I do want to ask for prayers for Sister’s family and their pup Stevie.  They lost their faithful and beloved dog Piper to lung cancer in early April and adopted a new rescue puppy in May.  They love their dogs like their children, and Sister has a bigger heart for animals than anyone I’ve ever known.  After a few terrible scares, Stevie has been diagnosed with the auto-immune disease of meningitis.  It is possible that she can have a good life with medication if she responds well to it.  That is my specific prayer for Stevie and Sister – that she WILL respond and she will live a long healthy life with the family that loves her so much.

  3. Love, love Musings posts!

I am so SO happy to hear John’s campaign was successful! CONGRATS John! ?? I agree, there’s just something about the energy on a college campus. So fun! Who knew about the paper towel trick?! I have small milk bottles that REFUSE to dry – thanks for sharing! Sweet Whit – I’m glad things are looking up. How fortunate he is to have you as a mama! Every single food you posted – YUM!, lays love your Lilly, fingers crossed for the Yeti!!, and finally – I’m sorry to hear about Piper and Stevie. We will keep Stevie – along with Sister and the fam – in our prayers. xoxo

  4. Love this musings!

Wonderful about John and finding what W craves most! I have 2 school aged sons and can relate on 1:1 time being necessary.

  5. My IPad didn’t show Whit’s baby photo this morning and I am SO glad I just saw it. How precious! I came back to look at your Lilly dress. Amanda, your flowered dresses and summer sandals remind me so, so much of my sweet and pretty mom, when I was a little girl and we lived in Florida. I can’t begin to convey what wonderful memories they bring. She was tiny, just like you and it gets me every time. :-)

  6. So sorry about your sister’s pup Piper! I was wondering about where the dog was in pictures but did not want to ask in case it passed away. Was the meningitis discovered after the “incident” of eating the banned substance in Tybee? Prayers for Stevie!

  7. I love your Musings! So much fun to catch up on the “other” things in life. Sending prayers out for Sister and Stevie! The pictures she posts on IG with Stevie shows what an important part of the family Stevie is!
