On My Bedside {Harry Potter and the Cursed Child} + Hurricane Matthew Update

First things first, a hurricane update.  Mother and Daddy-O reluctantly relocated here after a mandatory evacuation.  They arrived Friday night and have been in as high of spirits as possible.  We’ve tried to make the most of the situation with lots of family time, big meals, the littles’ sports and such.  They did get word this afternoon that their house sustained no visible damage from the front, which is incredible!  Sister has yet to be able to get information on Some Beach.  She has reached out to a few people but downed trees and power lines are making it hard to get around Tybee.  Fingers crossed they fared as well as Mother and Daddy-O!!  They are all waiting word from Chatham County on when they will be able to return to the area.  I’ll update y’all tomorrow as well.  Now, on to regularly scheduled programming.

I was really beyond excited for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to release in July.  I pre-ordered it and literally skipped to my mailbox the day it was to arrive.  This eighth story in the Harry Potter series was written as the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage.  Oh, how I wouldn’t love to see that!!!  It is based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, and reads as a script.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

I will admit, that despite my sheer excitement, I did have a little reservation about reading a play script.  In the end, I enjoyed the story and found it a quick read.  That being said, I really missed the unspoken thoughts, descriptions and narratives that were lost in play form.  I wish it had been longer, I wish it had been deeper, I wish, I wish, I wish…  Despite all of my wishes, at the end of the day it is absolutely worth the time for any true Potter fan.  I mean, we’ve waited eons for this so any little peek into what happened to Harry and the gang is welcome.

I’d love to know what y’all thought about this one.  And, as always, let me know what is on your bedside!

  1. I am SO happy to hear about your parents’ home – and I can’t imagine how anxious Sister must be waiting for news! Continued prayers that all is well…

I haven’t read ANY of the Harry Potter books (if you can believe that)! Maybe I should add them to my list! xoxo

  2. Very happy to learn that your parents’ home is safe and really hope that Sisters’ will be too, protected up high from the ground and from God above. :-) She’s been through so much. Please let us know all the wonderful foods that your dear mother prepared. You are a beautiful family and here’s hoping you can all relax again soon.

I read two books recently that had been waiting in my home library for much too long. Written by Alice Steinbach, titled “Without Reservations” and “Educating Alice”, they chronicled her mid-life world travels as she explored various cities and took classes to absorb the local cultures. They were both facinating and vivid and were a lesson in geography, as well. I was deeply disappointed to learn she passed away a few years ago, as her writing is beautiful.

Wishing you a week of recovery and promise. Enjoy your time together and thank you for the updates. My heart sank last night when I heard the bridge was underwater. Sleep well.

    1. Thanks for the book recos!! We found out that Some Beach only had minor damage – they are on the road there now. xo

  3. Our family weathered the storm in midtown Savannah and they are fine for which I am very grateful. My nephew’s beach home is part of old Fort Screen near the Lighthouse and we have not heard how it fared either. He and his wife had just renovated it this year!! Fingers crossed it made it through. As for the book, I purchased it day one, read it and like you, was disappointed because I knew if JK had written us a little book on the premise, it would have been much better. She is just a brilliant writer and this only whetted my appetite for more books by Ms Rowling. One friend of mine who is a Harry fan like me, did not even finish it.:(

  4. Glad to hear you all are making the best of an unexpected weekend together! Weekends together are hard enough to plan and so even if it’s a hurricane that you brought you together, you have to enjoy!

On my bedside – too many book! Our book club is reading A Man Called Ove.
Last month’s was Lilac Girls which was WWII from different perspectives. Lots of discussion on that one. A truly great 1st publication for the author.

    1. Yes, we made the most of it. Lilac Girls sounds great!! I recently read All the light we cannot see and this sounds like it could be similar. Thanks!

  5. God was good to us all! Here in Ft.Lauderdale we expected a direct hit for a time. So blessed. Prayers for Haiti.
