Magical Monday {Parasailing on Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay}

I shared every detail of our February cruise on the Disney Wonder, but wanted to give a full review of our parasailing adventure on Disney’s Castaway Cay.  All boats sailing out of Port Canaveral stop here at Disney’s private island and parasailing is an incredible way to add even more magic to your voyage!

We spent our morning on the lovely Castaway Cay and then rounded out the afternoon with our one hour parasailing trip.  I thought this was a great way to do it because we had plenty of time to enjoy the island and then boarded the Wonder directly after this to end the day.

We left with our group from Marge’s Barges and boarded the parasailing boat.  There were three parties on our trip – our family of 4, a family of 2 (mom/child) and a family of 3 (mom/2 kids).  The entire thing took no more than an hour.

The captain decides the order in which you go up, but he let us figure out who went with who.  I had heard that this isn’t always the case but it was my experience.  For example, the four of us determined that I would go with Whit and Honey would go with John.  The mom with two kids went up with both of them!

When it is your turn, you make your way to the back of the boat and the boat hand gets you strapped into the harness.  You then sit down on the very back of the boat one behind the other with your legs out straight in front of you.  The boat slowly takes off, the sail line extends and you are very gently lifted high into the sky.

The views were magnificent of the boat, Castaway Cay and the clear blue ocean waters.  It felt very calm and serene up there – not at all crazy, rocking or insanely windy like I thought it might.  At the end, the captain let each party have a toe-dip into the water.  I’m glad we didn’t get plunged because it was quite chilly!

If you go:

  • Sign up in advance at disneycruise.com.  I would do this as far in advance as possible to get the time of your choice.  You can cancel – I would check the policy at the time of booking.
  • You have to be at least 8 years old to go.
  • You cannot just ride along on the boat free of charge – everyone on the boat must pay the parasailing price.
  • They do allow you to take cameras and gopros up with you, but at your own risk.  We used our wrist straps and had no issues.
  • The excursion is charged to your room and onboard credit can be used to pay for it.
  • The captain and mate are not Disney employees and do accept cash tips.
  • Of all the times we’ve been to Castaway, we have only seen the conditions right this ONE time!  I surprised the littles with this since we sailed as part of the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and had a discounted rate for the trip.  I did not tell them in advance because I knew it was a real possibility that it would be cancelled.  If they do cancel it, you are not charged.
  • We wore swim suits and cover ups / t-shirts.  You can take a hat but it is very windy.  You leave your shoes at the dock.
  • The families on our boat took turns taking pictures and videos of each other.  It was really nice and everyone got their turn captured.
  • If this is your first time to Castaway Cay, there is plenty to do and see and I would not recommend scheduling an excursion for the sole purpose of having something to do :-)

    Overall this was a highlight of the trip for all four of us and such a special memory!  I would definitely do it again BUT there are SO many things to do, see and experience that it will likely be a good long while.
