It’s a Wrap on Second Grade

Well, it’s a wrap on second grade for the little one!  He celebrated in a few fun ways the last couple of weeks of school…

Writer’s Cafe

We transformed the classroom into a beatnik style cafe and each of the students took the stage to read a piece of their own writing.  Everyone wore black and we snacked, sipped coffee and snapped our approval.  It was a cute and unique way to showcase some of their best work and we were treated to everything from poetry to opinion pieces to a few limericks.

Field Day

I can still remember elementary school field day like it was yesterday.  It seems that not much has changed over the years – this is still one of the most anticipated events of the year!  I manned the soccer kick challenge station, but was able to float around here and there to meet up with this kid’s class.

Teacher Gift

I collected cash from the class to give as our end of the year gift since Ms. M is getting married AND moving in the next few months.  She is also a Disney fanatic so some cute Mickey picnic-ware seemed perfect for summer.

With that, my little guy is ready to sleep in, swim and watch cartoons for the next two months!!

  1. The last day of school was always my very favorite with my daughter (now 23). I LOVED the lazy days of summer with her home. Best of times!

    1. Yes!!! I love the last day of school where the whole summer is stretched out ahead of you!

  2. I can’t believe he just finished 2nd grade! Seems like yesterday he was anticipating going to Kindergarten and riding the bus (which if I recall he wasn’t too fond of at first).

  3. Love reading stories about your kids. What a creative idea with the beatnik cafe. Sure miss those days.
Enjoy this holiday weekend with that darling family of yours.

  4. What a cute idea for the writer’s cafe? Do all the parents get invited to attend? How long does the event take? I’m on PTA at my sons’ school and this might be something different and fun for us to try to implement too, so I’m curious about it. Thanks for sharing, I always love the fun things you do for your family!

    1. I’m so glad you asked – that is exactly why I share the details on these activities! The Writer’s Cafe happened in each 2nd grade classroom. All parents were invited and received a printed invitation sent home :-) The event was just one hour. It started with the snacks (provided by parents) and then after everyone had made a plate each child took the stage to read their piece. It was a great event and kids and parents alike loved it! Also, when we do events like this in the classroom and parents are invited, special care is taken to ensure every kid has a guest there. If a parent or grandparent can’t make it, the school arranges for one of the child’s previous teachers or favorite staff members to come as their guest of honor. <3
