The Delightful Home {Exterior, Paint Colors + Landscape}

May 2020: THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED

It has been quite a few years since I shared the work that we did on the exterior of our 1964 home and answered what is hands down the most frequent question I get on the blog, on social media and in real life… what are your paint colors?

This is what our home looked like when we purchased it in 2009.  (Minus the paint swatches I had already started testing when I took this “before” pic.)

And here is our home today!

The key items on our Project Curb Appeal list included:

1. Painting the facade

2. Updating the front portico and adding two mini porticos over the side doors off of the playroom and garage.  I printed out a bunch of copies of our house with a transparent rectangle over the top to dull out the image.  I then set to work with a sharpie drawing out various versions of the new front portico.  It was a great way to gauge the scale and how it would look overall.  This is the one we went with…

3. Landscaping the yard.  We took out 29 trees between the front and back yards (many were dead or leaning or hazardous or some sort of a weed that grew into a tree) and tore everything out of every bed.  I shared last week that we continue to update and evolve the landscaping as the years go by!

Here are the before and afters:

I love that we made all of these decisions over four years ago and still adore it as much as we did then.  I tend to go with what I love over trends and I tell you what, it may not ever “trend” on social media or “go viral” but it has paid off personally every time.  :-)

  1. Based on your rendering of the front of your home there’s no doubt that you’re a Tech grad! I’m still waiting on my porch and portico revamp. My hubby says I need to quit reading your blog. You have far too many good ideas that we can incorporate into our home.

    1. Haha! Thank you. I love any chance to put my schooling to use :-) And don’t stop reading!!!!!!!! :-) xo

  2. Amanda,
I had no idea that was BM Revere Pewter on you exterior. I have that on my living room walls and love how that color really goes with everything.

While I love BM interior paints, we have used Sherwin Williams Super paint on our exterior and nothing has beat it. It was last painted in 2006 and really held up beautifully. It is just started to begin fading so we will be painting the exterior next year.

    1. You know, mine very well could be color matched to sw. I feel like most contractors use that. Thanks so much for reading!

  3. You have done an amazing job with the exterior of your home. I love all the little details you put in and the color selection is stunning. The landscape is gorgeous. You have a beautiful home!

  4. Beautiful! Every detail is so lovely. Where did you get the fountain that is in the landscaping near the playroom door?

    1. Thank you so much! I honestly can’t recall where it was from. I am SO sorry. We had one at our last house too. I wish the blog went back that far so I could look it up :-)

  5. We redid our exterior over the fall and winter, adding a portico on our front porch as well. Changed paint colors (paint subs used SW paint), door, light fixtures etc. now time to start working on Phase II… landscaping! Did y’all design your own landscape plan or utilize a landscape designer/architect?

Loved your home before and after but really think the exterior now reflects your family better! So light and bright and happy looking!!!

As always, can’t wait for more!!!

    XOXO!

    1. So exciting! I did interview landscape installation companies and I had a list of plants I wanted. I did walk them through my ideas, but the company we chose came back with their own plan, using some of my ideas, that I loved. I appreciated that they did that as well. I scaled back on what their plan suggested just to save money but overall I’d say it was a collaborative process.

  6. I love looking through your before and after pics. We are decided between remodeling or moving. There is a house I love near us that has great bones but every.single.room. needs some TLC – including a total kitchen reno and master bath reno (which would be on back burner – sound familiar). Your projects give me hope but convincing my honey is the trick.

AND – i just your contractor went to my high school. His brother Nathan was in my grade. Small world :)

    1. Awww, thank you! Our home needed major TLC but the kitchen was already done and that was a lifesaver with a 3 month old and a 3 year old! I can’t believe you know Shawn and Nathan. We probably have quite a few mutual friends!

  8. I see your house is painted revere pewter. It looks so much lighter than all the other revere pewter houses I’ve seen online. Did you alter the paint at all or is it just the lighting? Your house is beautiful ☺️

  9. I just love your beautiful home. I have gotten samples of your exterior paint colors and painted them on poster boards. I just need to see how the colors look with the lighting around my house. Do you mind to share the resource for your front door? It really is lovely! Thanks so much!

    1. Thanks Cindy! The door was custom and our contractor handled the entire thing before we moved in. Unfortunately that was before my blogging days and I had a newborn and never thought to get the source. I’ve since lost touch with the contractor and have NO idea who made the door. I’m so sorry!
