The Miniature Earth Project

John’s social studies teacher started their year with this eye opening and, quite honestly, humbling video.  This is the version that she shared, and I think it is so incredibly powerful with the Mad World lyrics.  The original version can be found here.

The Miniature Earth Project reduces the world’s population to community of 100 people and makes it easy to grasp our diversity in culture, race, wealth, religion and so much more.

For our family, it has opened our minds and hearts to so much conversation, and I hope it may do the same for yours.

  1. Amanda, What a moving video! We all need to count our blessings, especially after this tremendously stormy and tumultuous week. It sounds like John is in a very interesting school. Is it private, a charter, or part of your school district?
How is your Dad doing with that knee?

    1. Yes, we do. And these last few weeks is what had me thinking about the video again. John is in a wonderful public school. Daddy-O is doing SO well. He just left here yesterday and I was so happy to see him moving around and up and down stairs like I haven’t seen him in years. Thank you for asking.

  2. Good morning – I have read your blog for years but have never commented (or for that matter commented on any website). I find you inspiring. As a high school teacher in a very affluent district, I have now shared this with my high school. It is eye opening and I do believe a necessary conversation. Thank you for this post and your awesome attitude.

    Wishing you all the best!

    1. Thank you so much, Ann. This really means a lot. I hope your students are able to have a thoughtful discussion afterwards. I’d be interested to hear their thoughts.

  3. I love how they don’t mention how much any other group spends towards aid ( because the US contribution dwarfs everyone else’s) , or that the US spends so much on our military because we basically cover military duty for most of the free world.

The other points are indeed humbling and poignant reminders of all we have to be grateful for, but they can never resist slamming the US.

  4. This is excellent. I’m sharing it with my boys. Thank you so much. This is why your blog is my very favorite. It’s fun but also reflects your intelligence and heart.

  5. Wow! Every man, woman and child (with a computer or smart phone) should see this video. Makes you stop and think….also makes you grateful for our many blessings. Thank you!
