The Blizzard of 2011

Yesterday in Georgia we awoke to a winter wonderland.  I spent a second or two savoring the snow covered yards, trees and roofs from the warmth of my home before the littles were clamoring to go out in it.

But first, I insisted on a warm, homemade breakfast of biscuits hockey pucks and Savannah Bee Company tupelo honey before heading out.  At least the honey and pot of Paris tea were delish.

(Absolutely nobody here thought that meal was worth the wait.  I am now determined to make biscuits every Saturday until I get them right.  Honey will likely be stashing mini powdered donuts for emergency breakfasts over the coming weeks.)

Breakfast aside, we promptly donned our warmest clothes and headed out to the golf course.  It was quite a sight.

Cookie is absolutely without a doubt his mother’s child when it comes to winter weather.  He despised that cold, wet stuff as much as I do.  Ward documented our quick foray outside and we ran for the sofa as fast as our legs would carry us (a sight for the neighbors I’m sure with me carrying him through nearly six inches of snow.)  Might I add that I was awfully pleased with my recent purchase of Hunter wellies and a warm, fleece lined rain coat today.  Such practical additions to my wardrobe.

While Cookie takes after his sun-lovin’ momma, John surely inherited not only Honey’s (handsome) looks, but also his love of snow.  The big boys hopped in the Jeep and headed out on the treacherous (according to the news) roads to pick up Honey’s friend D (who lives about ten doors down) before starting their search for the biggest hill in the ‘hood.  They spent hours outside rolling, sledding, having snow ball fights and sipping on Irish coffee (the big boys) that they resourcefully sourced from who-knows-where.

While they were out and about, I took the opportunity to start supper.  I’ve been waiting on the right (read: long with nothing else to do) day to make the Pioneer Woman’s Cowboy Dip Sandwiches.  If you don’t know the Pioneer Woman, you simply must check her out.  Her recipes are all delish!  And these sandwiches did not disappoint.

Cowboy Dip Sandwiches
– Thick slices of bread
– Pepper jack cheese, sliced
Braised Beef Brisket
– Marinated mushrooms (can’t seem to find this one online anymore…email me if you want it)
To assemble sandwiches, lay bread slices on baking pan and top half of them with sliced cheese.  Toast in oven at 400 for 5 minutes, add shredded brisket and mushrooms to cheese covered bread.  Top with another piece of toast.  Enjoy!

Meanwhile, the boys came home and warmed up with a cup of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and whipped cream before settling in to cut, color and glue, dump out every piece to every puzzle and play the wii for hours on end.

When some friends from down the street came by later in the afternoon, the boys all headed out AGAIN.  This time to “sled” down the hill in our front yard.  The snow seemed to grow on Cookie a bit when he realized he could eat it.

Speaking of eating snow, after our delish supper we rounded out our cold winter day with Snow Cream!!  John thought this was the “most awesomest” dessert he’d ever wrapped his sweet lips around.

Snow Cream
– 1/2 gallon of snow (we put our bowl out the night before to collect)
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1 cup milk
– 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Add sugar to snow and stir.  Mix together milk and vanilla in a separate bowl.  Pour milk mixture over snow mixture and stir.  Top to your heart’s desire with chocolate syrup and sprinkes.  Make your kid’s day.

Once the littles were all snug in their beds, I settled on the sofa with my cherry pit pac, a cup of tea and my Honey for a long winter’s night of football.  I’d never even heard of the Oregon Ducks until last night and I’m already a fan just based on their fashion-forward attire.  I’m going for the same (though less neonish) yellow and gray color scheme in my basement renovation.

And that, my friends, is how we spent the first day of “The Blizzard of 2011” as we’re callin’ it down South.  I do love a snow day.  And I’m ever so thankful that it usually only happens once a year :-)
