Camp Kingfisher

In this day and age of iPhones, wii games and way too many cartoons, I signed John up for camp at the Chattahoochee Nature Center hoping to reinforce that the outdoors is a marvelous playground – a place for aimless roaming, lazy daydreaming and unrivaled adventure.  In that vein, the PCP spent the last glorious week at Camp Kingfisher doing nothing other than being a BOY.

Camp opens each morning with songs and then small groups break out to explore natural habitats, plants indigenous to Georgia and loads of creatures.  Each day brings new adventures, covering everything from hiking to swimming to canoeing, and counselors aim to instill all sorts of life lessons, like making friends and respecting others.  They talk a great deal about protecting our planet and natural resources and encourage campers to bring “trash free” lunches – no zip locks, no chip bags, no paper napkins – as a tangible part of this effort.

At the end of his week at Camp Kingfisher, John successfully:

  • passed the deep end swim test and earned a bracelet denoting such (good gracious that makes me nervous)
  • brought not only a trash free lunch, but two trash free snacks each and every day
  • learned the basics of canoeing and took a spin in the craft three times
  • traded in some strange tree nut found weeks ago in the Nature Exchange for some other strange variety of rock
  • got to know a few choice snakes, turtles and Lord knows how many other creepy crawlies
  • made a few new friends

When I asked the PCP to name his very favorite thing about camp he thoughtfully replied, “Everything was my favorite.  It was all so favorite that I can’t even pick a favorite.”

This, my friends, is the kind of place where memories are made!
xoxo

  1. Love your blog! Quick question that doesn't really have anything to do with this post, but I wanted to make sure you saw it. :) For your custom monogram, is it both you and your husband's initals or just yours? I have always heard that the monogram for linens, etc should be the woman's initials. I wasn't sure if that was old fashioned or still reigned true. Thanks!

  2. Hi Lisa – the great thing about my AW monogram is that it's both :-). AW are my first/last initials AND since Honey's first initial us also W the AW can be for both of our first names as well. All that aside, in the case of monograms I throw tradition aside and use what I think is best for each scenario. More times than not I use our double monogram – either both first initials or my first/our last/his first aWw. Hope that helps :-)
