On My Bedside {Gone Girl}

After hoards of you have advised me to add Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn to my must-read list, I finally took the plunge!  And you were SO right!!

Gone Girl

Goodreads says:  On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?  As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?  With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

I was fascinated with how a marriage can become so toxic so quickly, and with the whole innocent-until-proven-guilty conundrum that Nick found himself in with the media.  I adore a book where I can’t really figure out what the next page will bring, and Gone Girl certainly accomplished that!  I was a little let down by the ending and had hoped for something more after such a twisted book.

As always, I’d love to hear what’s on your bedside!!
xoxo

  1. I love reading your blog, and imagine my surprise today when as I am reading your book review, I see Carthage MO pop up! We just recently moved from Carthage! I have to admit I am really missing it. To top it off the sheriff's last name is Dunn, so now I am really curious!! Thanks for your blog it is entertaining, inspiring, and encouraging!

  2. I read Gone Girl and while i cannot say I "enjoyed" it, it did keep me on the edge of my seat. I hear Reese Witherspoon is set to play Amy in the movie version. I will definitely be going to see it. Right now I am reading the Passing Bells trilogy by Phillip Rock. If you like Downton Abbey you will like this series. It was written in the 70s, went out of print and was just re released. I finished the first book and I am on to the second, Circles of Time. Its not Downton but it will do as I wait until 2014 to see the next episodes of my favorite Masterpiece Theater.

  3. I literally JUST finished this book this morning…I could not put it down. Read the entire thing in less than 2 days! I'm with you though…I was a little disappointed by the ending, but I have to admit, that happens to me often. I like for things to be completely wrapped up at the end of a book, which doesn't seem to be the norm! :)

  4. I am new to your blog, and from this post discovered your suggested reads. I am always in search of a great read! I Loved Gone Girl, but did not like the ending either. I am now on the last book of The Bronze Horseman Trilogy. The first book is a little slow to start, but ends as a page turner and I could not put the second book down! And so far…loving the third book.

  5. I'm reading this book right now…am on about the 6th chapter and I can't put it down either. I didn't know this would be a movie, but I'm not surprised-it would make a great one. Now I really can't wait for the ending-I'll try to get to it by tomorrow. Next on my list is a guilty pleasure-the new Patricia Cornwell book, The Bone Bed and then the new short story collection, Vampires in a Lemon Grove. Love to follow your blog.

  6. I also just finished reading that book, and it was a true "page turner"! The ending just didn't sit well with me either. I feel like one of them needed to "win" in the end, but it seems to be a draw. Oh, that Poor child!!

  7. I also just finished this book and like other readers was very disappointed with the ending. I don't necessarily think it needed a "winner" in the end but the story seemed to just fade out. Odd for a story that kept me eager to keep turning pages.

  8. I loved Gone Girl, except the ending. Our book club just finished Silver Linings Playbook and it's really good. Now we are reading The Hangman's Daughter. I can't put it down. It's so good.

  9. I may or may not have neglected my kiddos this summer while I read "Girl Gone". I am still mad about the ending!

I am in search of a new book to read. I tried the "Hangman's Daughter" but I really could not get into it.

  10. I started reading this before Christmas and just kind of stalled out after about 25 pages. Thanks for motivating me to get back on it!

  11. I just finished Kate Morton's, The House at Riverton. Good read and sort of reminded me of Downton Abbey. The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons was really a good book. It's not new and not sure why I missed it before now but I do love Siddons' books, a good southern writer that we Dixie Girls can relate to! Always enjoy your blog…thank you for sharing your life with us….Marti

  12. I loved this book but was also disappointed by the ending. I do think the movie will be great… love Reese!

I am reading a super interesting non-fiction book called "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" right now. It is seriously fascinating and I can not believe I've lived to the ripe old age of 30-something and have never heard of Henrietta Lacks.

  13. I, too, read Gone Girl and was disappointed in the ending. I want the bad guy to get their just desserts I guess. I noticed the mention of The House Next Door, that is a golden oldie that was good! Also read The House at RIverton and the Henrietta Lacks book which was very interesting. Our book club is reading A Heart For Freedom next and I haven't started it, so can't give a reco yet. Looks fascinating though. I love books so I could go on and on, but I'd better stop! I just did a book post and am going to continue to highlight favorites. I will be mentioning books for kids too, as I am strongly encouraging my grands to read.

  14. Another great David Fincher movie. Fulls of twists and turns, this is a story of love and intrigue and foul play. Excellent. I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Even the eventual revelation of what I thought was the big question of the film didn't relieve the tension. Very nicely done.
