And They’re Off

Well, just like that another school year has commenced.  I realize it sounds cliché, but time really does fly.  As has become our tradition on first day’s of school years past, Honey fired up the griddle for pancakes and we had a nice little breakfast to send them off.  Except this year were were celebrating TWO, not just one!  I brought out my DIY chalkboard, our Happy Everything plate (sadly, the school bus attachment is retired but I found it on ebay) and a little school bus and letter magnets found at the Dollar Tree last year to set the table.

When Honey proclaimed these his “best letter pancakes yet”, I told him it must be satisfying to have finally fulfilled his life long dream of mastering the pancake pen.  *bwahahahaha*  I assure you this was a talent he never aimed to have.

The baby’s breakfast happened an hour after the PCP’s.  He could not crack open his baby blues to save his life and I wasn’t about to force him out of bed a minute early.

John headed off on the bus to second grade, just as confident and excited as ever.  I had planned to take him to school, or at least to follow the bus to school (I mean, come on) , but when the other kids started showing up at the bus stop I gave him a big hug and knew it was time to let him spread his wings.

Cookie is attending a two-day pre-K at the same school and with the same incredible teacher that big brother had.  So I’ll still have him at home with me five days a week for one more year.

And while I my heart swells with joy to see them experience the world outside of our little nest, it is incredibly bittersweet.

Godspeed, little angels.

  1. What a great way to start their school year. They both look so excited! I still am in disbelief that they have all gone back to school. We have one more week with our baby girl before making the drive back to Texas.

  2. Time really does fly doesn't it? I have that same plate and just bought the school bus too ~ I didn't realize it was retired! {My shop had lots} So fun to see all of your special traditions.
Enjoy your 2 days each week!

  3. Your boys are so blessed to have such a loving and thoughtful mommy! You have really set the bar high for their future wives! :) I love your blog and enjoy your home decorating posts, as well as your family adventures.

I have a crazy question…what kind of tennis shoe does your PCP have on in his first day of school picture? I like the color and contrasting laces! My 9 yr. old son has the same Vineyard Vines tee…aren't they so cute?

Enjoy your day; although I'm sure you are anxiously waiting for that school bus this afternoon!

    1. Hi! Thanks for your sweet comment :-). They are Nikes – found them at rack room and I have no idea what the line is. The laces are from there too but we bought them separate for a few dollars.

  4. Love the send off breakfast! So proud of your Honey for mastering the pancake pen! I've thought about trying that out! I hope your littles have a fantastic school year and a great first week!!

  5. Seeing your boys start their first day of school brought back such wonderful memories. Although my little boy is now 32, I always love looking at that sweet picture of him getting on the school bus for the first time when he started kindergarten. Oh, how the time does fly!

  6. I can't believe kids are going back to school. Where has the summer gone? Such a cute breakfast and fun way to have them start what I'm sure is a very nervous and exciting day! BTW – LOVE your monogrammed chairs.

  7. Bittersweet indeed. We have one more week until school starts, but I am already missing my 2nd grader.
So excited though for all the experiences the year has in store.

Hubby is the pancake pen wizard in our house too…funny the things that they lay claim to.

  8. Love checking in with your blog as your boys are a year off from mine, who are entering 3rd and K this year. Do enjoy your last year with younger brother…I'm going to miss my little pal.
