Brother’s Room {The Family Desk}

I wanted to start today by saying how completely overwhelmed and touched I was by your outpouring of love yesterday.  After losing Matthew I was terrified that I would forget the little details of that day; that people would never even know one of the most significant things about me.  So thank you for reading my story, for sharing your stories of loss (I cried many times yesterday reading your comments and emails), for sharing your stories of hope (I also smiled many times), and for being so very supportive and understanding.

Now, for the little one that will be EIGHT in three short days, I’ve finished up the desk corner of his room and it turned out way better than expected!!  (I wasn’t sure it would come together at all because it’s a pretty random mish mash of stuff.)

I really, really love using family heirlooms in our house.  So, when Mother and Daddy-O offered up the desk and chair that was both Mother’s as a child and mine as a child, I knew I had to take it for John’s room.  I despised the hardware (no pre-pics…Daddy-O switched it for me) and wasn’t over the moon for the finish (yet couldn’t bear to paint it).  Buuuuuut now that it’s in the space, I can’t imagine not having it!  In attempt to make it a little more fun, Mother and I slaved away at the slip cover… which we now affectionately refer to as the “old chair’s puffer vest.”  It’s cute enough, but not exactly what we had envisioned.  And let’s just say that by the time we slipped it on, we absolutely knew why my upholsterer Chang wanted nothing to do with it.  Just as soon as I told him what I wanted he shook his head and carried it straight back to my car.

I purchased the deer for a steal, made him an oyster shell necklace (which I totally want for myself, by the way) and had intended to use it in the baby’s room, but never found the perfect spot. The gorgeous fish painting is by Angie Reuter.  She’s a very special lady to little John, so he adores having her work in his room.  The LED desk lamp was compliments of Lamps.com – John chose it himself and I love it’s sleek design!!  My littles love to have places to keep their “treasures” and it took no time at all for John to fill up the wire box.  The silver cup belonged to Honey’s grandfather and now holds John’s loose change.

I knew I wanted to put some sort of message center up in the room – to display invites and special pictures and record dates, school projects and things like spelling words.  Honey built the chalkboard from scrap wood and paint we already had and I added the little clothes line with two eyelets, twine and paperclips.  See here for more.

By the looks of it, he seems to be settling in to the new space just fine :-)

  1. What a fabulous spot for him to do homework! The slipcover is perfect. Adore the fabric. I love that you have used many family pieces in each of the boys rooms. Your boys are sure to grow up appreciating things of the past!

  2. I love it…especially what you wrote on the chalkboard. Those things will stick in the littles' minds. You are a good mother.

  3. Love what you've done with the desk and all the other decor! I know John is going to enjoy having his special space. So many treasured mementos too!

  5. Love, love, love, the desk and what you did with it. As always, it is perfect!

    I also am SO excited for you that you are on the tour of homes. Your house is PERFECT for that and will outshine them all, I'm sure! Congratulations!!!!

  6. What a beautiful study area! Lucky John! Loving the art, desk, DaddyO's silver bowl and especially the slipcover and deer with a necklace! I am going to give my Ericka an animal with a necklace in her bedroom and call it Amanda!!!

  7. Love it! And I just learned that Home Depot carries chalkboard boards already prepared, of course AGTER I had already bought all of my supplies! But I went with their board, they cut it down for me, and it was only $10, and I have a whole extra side left to make another one. I returned all the supplies :-) Where oh where is your dear deer from? Ha ha! Love it!
