Pillow Talk

Let’s talk pillows, shall we?  Specifically, I’d love your input on pillows for my new sofa.  I definitely want to add a little blue to go with the rest of the room.  I don’t really want a print or a check because I already have those in the space.

Option A: This is where I’ve been headed from the get go.  Two long lumbar pillows made out of the drapery fabric.  It’s pretty and doesn’t wrinkle when used.  (I hate having wrinkled pillows on the sofa and we use this one every day.)  Something like this…

Option B: Two regular square pillows – one on each end.  I don’t want to load it up with too many because they always end up on the floor anyway and it needs to be practical for every day heavy use.  Here are some options:

Suzanne Kasler Quatrefoil Applique Pillow Cover - Mineral 22"

(not sure if this is exactly the right color, but something blue with a white monogram)

Option C: NEW!!  One long lumbar.  THANK YOU to Jackie and Tery for jogging my memory on this one :-)

Oh, and for those of you that suggested a monogrammed lumbar, Jane was kind enough to send me a picture of her gorgeous pillow.  Some variation of this could be quite nice too!!

So what say y’all???  The lumbars, the quatrefoil, the monograms, something else???  I’m excited to hear!!  Oh, and if you’ve seen a fabulous fabric, send me a link to that too :-)  (Now I’m being really greedy!)

xoxo

  1. I love the lumbars as well–unexpected, but it still works. I also loved the quatrefoil pillows–they were different, and I love that. Any of the three would be fabulous! The new couch is gorgeous!

  2. I initially loved the lumbar pillow, and know you would adorn it with a fabulous fabric. Maybe consider adding something for texture around the edges for depth to the space. I do have a question though – the monogram you have I know it is a custom piece because you use it frequently, but how did you have it developed and how is it executed through-out your house? Thanks for always making my day with your posts! Jess

    1. I too would like more info on getting my custom monogram designed.

I too like the lumbers. I like both ideas but think the 2 lumbers would be more practical than 1 as some people may not like the extra pillow behind them if more than one person is on the sofa. I agree with trying your long one to test the idea out.

Lastly, is your blue fabric still available?

  3. Monogram on the lumbar? I wonder how that would look. Love a monogram and love a lumbar so I am thinking that way. Di in NC

  4. I would be sure not to use a super dark fabric, as sometimes those can rub off on the light couch color. I vote for lumbar, but you could also monogram that.

  5. In my opinion, the lumbars have the greatest impact and the least likely problems on a daily basis–mom to three boys here, I can tell you about couch pillow problems : )

  6. I like the quatrefoils the best for the space! I love lumbars on a sofa, but they're just not very practical when they're on a sofa used often (unless the sofa is deep). Otherwise they're uncomfortable and end up on the floor! BUT any of the options would LOOK wonderful!

  7. love the lumbars. long ones. accents the lines of the pretty sofa and there are so few places they can be used this well. maybe not , tho, in matching to the drapes. maybe use another fabric for layered depth in the room, or one side match and one side a new choice. xo

  8. Oh.my.goodness! I don't know Shaun (above) or had ever known about Jolie Marche but I just checked out the Etsy shop and it's the perfect suggestion! (Especially the monogrammed, antler pillow cover. Be still my heart. Rush yourself over there, girls and check it out immediately. Perhaps they (she) can make you a custom cover for the ever popular lumbar choice. Jane, San Diego

  9. Love the Jolie Marche pillows mentioned above and love her beach inspired designs, the sea horses, oh my! Di in NC

  10. How about two lumbar pillows in blue with a white monogram on each? A friend of mine did this and it turned out to be so pretty~and having it on the lumbars was unexpected but quite scrumptious!

  11. My vote is for the lumbars in the drapery fabric. I also like the fabric on the stools behind the couch. It's different.

  12. I love the lumbars, but your sofa cushions are already that type of cut. I love the quatrefoil look!

  13. I too love the lumber pillows. I saw a picture in a magazine that had an extra long lumber pillow…just one extra long pillow. It was unusual and very good looking.

  14. Found the picture of one extra long lumbar pillow…it's from Southern Living Magazine (2011) Steele Marcoux's (editor at Coastal Living).
I could see your boys wrestling with it…I know mine would!

  15. Love all the pillows, probably the monogrammed ones the best. Can you tell us more about your monogram? I can see the "W" and the "A", is there a third initial? Is this your personal monogram or yours and your husbands, in other words, is his first initial shown also? It's beautiful, and I'm just wondering how to do one for our family.

  16. Thank you EVERYONE for your kind replies!! Here goes a bunch of answers…
    Jackie – Yes, absolutely!!

Jessica – I had number four eleven in Savannah do it. They have done them for tons of Dixie Delights readers and can work with you over email. They provide you with the embroidery file to use at any monogrammer.

Shauna & Jane – I have one of her pillows on the sofa on my porch!!! I LOVE it!!

Paula – the rug is indoor outdoor from Ballard Designs. I've had it for 5 years though. The one they most recently offered wasn't colored or made as nicely.

Tery – as soon as you said one lumbar, I knew exactly what pic you were thinking of. I've had it in my files for ages and now I'm very seriously considering that. I loved that sofa!

Diane – It's just an A (my first) and W (husband's first AND our last so it works for both mine and ours combined). Number four eleven in Savannah did it for me and can incorporate 3 letters as needed!

    Thanks again, y'all!

  17. I think the lumbars alone are too horizontal with the length of the sofa. If you do a square on each end you could have a small lumbar with your monogram in the middle or monograms on the square and nothing in the middle.

  18. I would go with monogram on lumbar pillow! That would be so cool!! I received my order today and what can I say but LOVE!! They will be appearing on my blog this week.

  19. The lumbars look like they would be hard to find a spot on the floor when sitting on the sofa…so large for a family room. I vote for two suzanne kasler and a small monogrammed lumbar in the middle aka Jane. Excited to see the results!

  20. Oops…changed my mind….divided back sofa…so yeah two smaller-ish lumbars….those big ones look like a nightmare for the boys to place somewhere else. :)

  21. Ok, loving the new option of one monogrammed! Best of both worlds!!! However, be forearmedthem…the boys will probably want to use it as a giant sword/light saber! LOL This is coming for someone who grew up with 3 brothers!

  22. Dixie, I just want to compliment you on your impeccable manners for responding to all of us! What a sweetie you are for being so genuine. By the way, the fabric on the stools has always caught my eye too. Scrumptious! Whatever you pick will be perfect and then we'll all move in! Jane ~ San Diego

  23. I think you do no wrong, so your eye is the leader here above all. However, the immediate thought I had was to consider the visual behind the sofa. 2 corbels, 2 stools, 2 lumbars. If you like that symmetry then go with it. If you want to break the symmetry, consider a departure from the paired/bookend stair visual stepping. I would say something other than monograms to honor and showcase the gorgeous monogrammed chairs you have in the open dining space adjacent to this space.

  24. I'm just a lover of the smaller, traditional pillows. They are easy to change out, as well as manuver on the couch. I would be afraid the long couch lumbar wouldn't leave anyone enough room to sit comfortably–especially if they have an ample behind!! And I love the fabric choice of the curtain fabric!

  25. I vote the 2 lumbar and one monogram in the middle, just to break up the long rectangular lines of the sofa. I think the lumbar are a great option for the couch where the kids will always be throwing pillows on the floor, but adding in a pillow with the monogram just keeps it traditional Southern too.

  26. Oh goodness you have the prettiest home! I love the long lumbar pillow with the monogram, gorgeous! I have the same problem, all of the pillows end up on the floor and then I have to pick them up constantly.

  27. The sofa is gorgeous! All of your options are good ones, so hard to pick! I think I'd definitely use the monogram on blue. Hard to decided between 2 squares or one long lumbar, but definitely a monogram.

  28. I, too, love the lumbar look. As a designer (for what it's worth), I love the idea of something that can take a beating in this space. We LIVE on our white sofa and I've yet to find a good pillow arrangement for the four of us. I'd go for the two different ones. I have two children and can see them fighting over one…I can also see it becoming a weapon or knocking pictures off the side tables!
PS – I want a custom monogram! Not sure I can spring for that right now, but reasonably priced?

  29. Loving the look of the two lumbar pillows but I would supplement with one monogrammed square front and center (maybe in a soft velvet in blue, a bit darker than the curtain fabric?)…so my vote would be to combine option 1 and option 2.

  30. Beaufort Belle – Unfortunately almost all of that fabric in the room has been discontinued – the toile on the bar stools, the curtains and the tiny check on the pillows/bench at the banquette.

Lindsey – I can't even remember how much I paid. Maybe $100?? Was so long ago! Just give them a call to ask :-)

  31. Since you asked…No on the single lumbar. If I were there, I would avoid the sofa…looks like there's no room to sit. It also looks like there's no contrast with all the lengths…no squares, etc. I hope you understand my sharing! :)
