The Family Office

When I first shared our playroom a few weeks ago, I mentioned that we were already making plans to turn it into a family office.  Well, I have a first cut at what this might look like to share today!! This is admittedly much more fluid than most of my inspiration boards.

Here’s our bucket list:

  • A neutral, relaxing and elegant space that flows with the rest of the house and looks nice from the foyer
  • Use furniture we already have in the attic, including a day bed OR two slipper chairs, a coffee table and a large mirror
  • Two custom desk spaces for the littles (and adults alike) that will fit a computer, books and school supplies
  • Comfy seating area (two big chairs or the day bed) for reading, studying, relaxing, etc.
  • A totally renovated closet space for our office supplies, materials, crafting and party wares
  • No TV!

Now, we already have a carpenter working on two built in desk spaces for the littles.  With any luck, they should be done in about a month or so!  They will be painted white and will take up the same footprint as the existing TV / shelving unit.  I fretted over this design for weeks and am so nervous about how it will turn out in real life.

When the Container Store had their entire Elfa line on sale in February, the baby and I spent a day with a designer laying out the perfect system for the closet.  Everything arrived this weekend and I am beside myself with excitement!!!  Of course, first we need to clean out the closet, remove the existing shelves, patch the holes and paint it.  It’s gonna get ugly before it gets pretty.

I spied this gorgeous chandy at Mother’s Home Depot over St. Patrick’s weekend and can’t get it out of my mind.  I need to wait to see if the furniture arrangement will permit a chandelier before I purchase anything.

Oh, and as for the gorgeous oyster painting above, I’ve had that stored under my guest room bed for a year.  I used my birthday money last year to purchase it and cannot wait to get it up.  It’s huge and stunning and, yes, features my favorite mollusk.  Between this and the laundry room, I’m a little batty with all the disorder.  I’m hoping to wrap both of these projects up before summer!!  Which means I’d best get a move on.

  1. I saw that same chandelier and was thinking about where I could put it in my house!! I love your ideas and the whole plan for this room. You are going to love having the designated work space. I can't wait to see it all finished! Enjoy the weekend!

  2. It is going to be amazing! Love the ideas you came up with. Cannot believe you have had that beautiful painting in hiding!!!
I know exactly how you feel about having things not finished. We are in the midst of some minor and major projects to come, and I cannot wait for it to be done!!! I do not do well in an unsettled environment. Gives me hives. LOL

  3. Love all your bits and pieces of ideas. That is going to look great and I hope you can work the chandy in! Good luck getting that and the chandy done. xo Diana
