A Better Vision

I’m back today with another update on progress in the family office.  Sadly, Mother and I found no time to even cut the fabric for the drapery.  However, I did run a gazillion ideas by her and Sister and was able to really get a much better plan down on paper.

FamilyOffice3

If you will remember, our bucket list for the room included:

  • A neutral, relaxing and elegant space that flows with the rest of the house and looks nice from the foyer
  • Use furniture we already have in the attic, including a day bed OR two slipper chairs, a coffee table and a large mirror
  • Two custom desk spaces for the littles (and adults alike) that will fit a computer, books and school supplies
  • Comfy seating area (two big chairs or the day bed) for reading, studying, relaxing, etc.
  • A totally renovated closet space for my computer, our office supplies, materials, crafting and party wares
  • No TV!

In addition to finalizing the vision, I also ordered a few yards of this fabric for pillows in the two slipper chairs and cushions on the littles’ desk chairs.  Unfortunately, the day bed just wouldn’t work.  It was a few inches too long and would have impeded use of the closet.  Oh, and I did end up pulling the coffee table out of the attic and it works perfectly in front of the chairs.

I also got every inch of the room painted!!  We already had someone coming out to do the foyer, stairs and upstairs hallway (flat paint + 5 years + 2 boys + high use area = disaster) so he added on the office walls, ceiling AND trim for $100.  YES PLEASE!!!!  The ceiling is Quiet Moments (same color we did on our portico and porch ceilings), the trim is Alabaster (we’ve used throughout the house) and the walls are Pale Oak (same as the master and Whit’s room).  I love repeating colors throughout a house for a cohesive look.  I think we have 7 total colors between the entire inside, outside, garage and exterior of the house!

Thanks to a wonderful reader suggestion, I have ordered this capiz light cover to cover the bare bulb in the closet.  It was on sale for $16 when I purchased and I will be over the moon if this pans out in my space!!!!

While I was ordering, I also picked up this schoolhouse barstool to tuck inside the workspace in the closet.  It was also on sale last week.  WIN!  We have this style of stool in our kitchen and they are surprisingly comfortable!

As of this morning, the room is looking like this…you can see the chairs and table here, although they are covered with plastic, and the rug still needs to be removed.  The pic is compliments of the baby since I am stuck on the sofa. boo hoo hoo

To Do List:

  • Remove wall shelves
  • Patch holes
  • Paint – need paint color first!
  • Make window treatments (a daunting task)
  • Organize closet
  • Decide on daybed vs 2 chairs – if daybed will need bedding and pillows… oh, and we will need new hardware since it was all lost in the move
  • Get coffee table out of attic??
  • Paint mirror from attic
  • Find chest for between windows
  • Find rug
  • Take down fan and figure out new lighting
  • Find the missing closet door (how on earth did we lose that?)
  • Closet light
  • Seat cushions for desk chairs
  • Pillows for slipper chairs – need trim

With that, I guess I’ll get back to just sitting and waiting on my ankle to heal…  (boooooooring)  In all honesty, I have not moved off of my sofa other than to use the bathroom and get to the bed in the evening.  I’ve only taken my compression sock and brace off to ice my ankle a few times a day and it is already feeling SO much better.  I not going to push it and plan to stay parked while it fully heals.  On the bright side, I had a wonderful visit and lunch with bestie N who I don’t get to see often enough :-)

  1. This room is going to be such a lovely (and functional!) addition to your home. I'm loving watching the room come together! Glad you seem to be healing well! xo

  2. In my humble opinion, I really love something neutral for the boys to sit on in lieu of the original red chairs….although if you needed something with more support, those"ghost chairs" are really cool and literally blend in with ANY decor. Feel better!

    1. Hee hee no red chairs! That was a pic from a mag I took on my iphone. I'm using the ghost chairs but w seat cushions. They are the perfect size for the boys!

  3. Don't you just love a To Do List with things marked off!! That is how I motivate myself to get any project done!! And that shell light will be just perfect in the closet, hope it works out for you. Have fun creating your new office space….I cannot help but covet it just a bit!!:)

  4. I really like how your room is coming along. Love the material for the pillows and the light fixture you've picked out to replace the fan. Question for you. When you replace your ceiling fans with lights do you miss the cooling off the fans provide in the south. I live in florida and have ceiling fans in most rooms. Hate the look but love the help with cooling during our long hot summers. Hope your foot is feeling better.

Oh yes. Thank you for your outstanding post on Disney Hilton Head. It looked so inviting that my sister, brother and I (plus our sweeties) have booked a stay in November. Plus the rates are unbelievably low this time of the year. Win! Win!

    1. Hi!! We have been using small oscillating hunter fans in our bedrooms and love them! The main level and basement stay cool. It's just the upstairs. Anyhoo, I'm so excited that you are going to hhi!!! Lmk if you need any more info :-)

  5. It is going to be amazing! I love every detail. Yeah, for Bestie N and her sweet visit. She is such a sweet person. One thing the girls found that worked better/quicker than ice packs was ice baths. Fill a bucket with water and lots of ice…yes, it is torture at first, but put your entire foot up to your ankle in the bucket. Keep it there until it feels numb. It really works wonders on the swelling and pain, if you can suck it up long enough to deal with the icy water, LOL.

  6. The room looks like it's going to be fabulous! I love the idea of covering the bare bare bulb with that adorable light cover. I have a bare bulb in my laundry room and I think I may need to order one too!

  7. Ummmm…you also scored a Sweet Honey dress for CeeCee Belle. That was a very productive day!!! xoxo

  8. The fabric is so beautiful !!! Progress on the room looks great so far can't wait to see the final product!! And I totally think you, sister, and mother should start a design firm!!

  9. I love to see this room evolving! Great ideas and great colors. So sorry to read about your injury! It must be driving you insane to have to sit still! If you can get your husband to swing by a health food store or maybe even a pharmacy, have him pick up a tube of Arnica gel/cream. I use it on my neck when I have issues and my friend's doctor told her to use it on her knee when she was recovering from a torn ACL. It's supposed to help with sprains and bruises and always relieves my neck when I am sore. It's worth a try to help it heal faster! Feel better soon!

  10. Amanda, you mentioned painting the foyer, stairway, and upper hallway. What color palette did you use? Did you continue these colors, the previous palette or something new?

  11. My aunt's knee surgeon told her to make her own ice pack using a 2:1 ratio of water and rubbing alcohol in a freezer bag. It has a slushee appearance and molds to the body part when applied to the injured area. Just place the ziplock back in the freezer and it will be ready the next time you need to ice. I hope you're back to normal activity levels soon.
