At Long Last

And I do mean “long”.  We, as in Honey and I, ran a 5k!!!!  Like we actually ran it and we really finished!!!!!

Honey has always dabbled in running, but I was inspired after the Disney Princess 5k this February to give it a go.  I downloaded Active’s Couch to 5k app and started training in late February.  And when I say I started at my couch, I truly mean that.  I think I had to run for just 1 minute that first week and I barely made it.  If you’ve been following this journey, you know that I had nearly finished the nine week program when I hurt my ankle falling down the stairs.  Well, four full months after the injury and six months in to training, I finally did it.  I ran a 5k!!!!  And with my Honey to boot!!!!  It wasn’t pretty, but I did it and I am seriously proud to say it :-)

I forgot to stop my app so I have no idea how long it took us. We did run the entire thing.  Up the hills and all.  UGH.  I wish I could figure out how to look it up online but I’ve just been too darn busy with school and such.

I want to give a little shout out to the Couch to 5K app.  It was the perfect thing for me and moved at a great pace for a beginner.  Bestie M used it too and she’s mastered the 3 miles :-)  In fact, we have a group of five gals running another 5k next month.  I never, ever thought I’d call myself a runner.  But boy does it feel good.  And the cute outfits don’t hurt.

Many of you have asked if I have lost weight and the answer is YES.  I didn’t set out to lose weight – I solely set out to run a 5k.  But I guess it was an added bonus.  Most people that live by me never knew me before I was essentially pregnant for 18 months with Whit and our angel baby Matthew, so I get a lot of questions about my weight when running around town.  I put on a whole bunch of lbs and, after 5 years, I can finally say that the last 15 are gone!!!  I feel better and I feel better about myself.  What I DID set out to do in 2014 was to eat healthy breakfasts and lunches.  (I knew better than to touch my suppers…this gal loves her food.)  Between two good meals and some exercise, it really came off.  If you’re curious, I run three days a week and Honey just started coming WITH ME!!!  It’s how we start our mornings and it feels great.

I plan to run further than a 5k.  I hope it will get easier and easier as time goes by and I look forward to running a few fun races every now and then (especially those where tutus are required).  In fact, I’m already registered for Disney Princess race weekend 2015!!
xoxo

  1. Your running is very inspiring to me as a SAHM. I want to give your training program a try, thanks for sharing it!

  2. Congrats! You earned it. So glad you were able to move on from the injury. I am really going focus on eating better and exercising more this year. It is good to know that just by changing two meals a day and running 3 you've seen such a difference. As you know, we love to cook…so I too (nor hubby) want to mess with dinners. I really need to check out this app!! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Congratulations on this inspiring accomplishment! I need to get back into running so appreciate your story, and app suggestion! Because the recipes you share are always so dee-lish, what are you making for healthy lunches and breakfasts? Need some variety in my lunch and break. repertoire!

  4. GREAT JOB!! I've been running with my neighbor who is training for a marathon in Disney this Fall…I was actually thinking of going with her but it's the same weekend my girls have their dance recital. We us the app 10K runner it sounds very similar to yours.

  5. Seems like yesterday you were so down about your injury and now, voila! Congratulations, Amanda. That is an amazing achievement!

How on earth do you do it all? Please share your typical daily routine with us. You are such an inspiration!

    Jane, SD

  6. Would you mind sharing healthy breakfast/lunch ideas? I'm doing the 5k training too and need that extra boost too. Thanks!

  7. A few have asked for healthy breakfast and lunch ideas and I will offer with the disclaimer that I was eating chick fil a and donuts or brownies up until this new year so pretty much anything would be an improvement. For breakfast I always have a bowl of plain non fat greek yogurt with fresh fruit, a drizzle of honey and some granola on top. If I'm on the run, I keep a bowl of hard boiled eggs in the fridge and just grab one of those and a banana or piece of fruit. The boys also snack on those. For lunch I almost always have a huge salad – arugula, sliced boars head turkey, tomatos, cukes, peppers, edamame, cut up egg or avocado, garbanzo beans, and carrots. I just use a little bit of a balsamic vineg. on top.

  8. You inspired me to do a couch to 5K app. I was four weeks in when I hurt my back. I should start it up again now. But…..I went to a physical after the first 4 weeks of the running (and eating better)…and I weighed more than I ever have (except while pregnant!). GAHHHH! Muscle or not, not fun!
Anyways, good job and you look great!
