Veterans Day

The PCP carried home an assignment last week to interview the veterans in the family.  Well, much to his dismay, we have a whopping ONE.  However, I assured him our one was a good one and we set up time to face-time interview my Uncle John who retired as Colonel in the US Army after twenty-six years of service.

There were so many things that I loved about this assignment.  First, that it gave us a reason to call my uncle and thank him for his service, as well as squeeze in a few minutes with my Aunt and cousin R.  Second, that we both learned SO much about him and his service!  My John was most impressed that he had over 2,000 hours of combat flying time and half of that was a night.  He loved seeing my uncle’s rifle and flight helmet from Vietnam and his dress sword with the engraving.  Third, that I got some real giggles over questions like “Were you at Gettysburg?” and the “oh, you must not be as old as Ampa then” type comments when he found out the answer.  Last but not least, I loved this assignment because we are now parlaying an upcoming holiday trip to include a stop at their house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!

So this Veterans Day, I want to sincerely thank all, especially my Uncle John, that have served and sacrifice for our country and our freedoms!!

As for our day, the littles ran off to school in their patriotic colors and I was scheduled to be Whit’s center helper.  Well, imagine my supreme shock when I showed up to find them dissecting owl vomit.  Yes, you read that right.  Whit found a whole rodent skull in his piece.  And some rib bones to boot.

After that lovely experience, he begged me to stay for lunch.  I wasn’t prepared and, after one brief look at the choices, took the baby’s lunch and told him he should buy one.  So, it was a banner kind of day for me.

With that, we’re off for haircuts (it was the above pic that tipped me off) and homework!!

  1. What an interesting project – my boys would love to interview the veterans in our family! And owl pellets… yeah. I've done that before too. Can't believe kinders are doing that already!

  2. It is always great when the younger generation get to connect with their elders! And, let me just say…ewww…I thought they saved that one for middle school science class.

  3. From a great interview to looking at intestines….lol Both "I" projects. Those were each quite the project. The baby will look so cute with his new haircut. Hope you have a great night…xo Diana

  4. Wow! Kindergarten curriculum has changed a lot! Owl vomit used to be a third or fourth grade project. I can only imagine what he'll dissect then. Let's hope that if it's a shark he's not allowed to bring it home. Those things stink even in zip lock bags and left out on the deck. He must love kindergarten!!!! The possibility of your uncle having fought at Gettysburg made me chuckle. I'm so glad your son has found a terrific teacher.

  5. This first grade teacher is smiling. Dissecting owl pellets was always a favorite activity for my students. The assignment for Veteran's Day was an excellent assignment. Kudos to your children's teachers.

  6. I love the Veteran's Day assignment! I really feel that everyone should ask their elders, family members or dear friends about their life experiences. I didn't and now it's too late.

Whit's school assignment? I couldn't look and it really turns my stomach. How in the world did you eat lunch? :)
