SIX

Is it just me or do y’all find that reflecting on your baby’s birthday is much harder than for your first born?! With John I am always moving forward, looking ahead, anticipating milestones, and the like. But with Whit I have an overwhelming desire to stop, freeze time and live in the moment. This child has brought immeasurable joy to my life every single day for the last six years. He’s one of those types of people that spreads light wherever he goes. He’s a laid back, matter-of-fact, independent, perpetually happy kind of kid, and I love him with my whole heart.

I have the very best time each year on his birthday sitting down to hear all about the things he loves. A lot of these are the same year after year. My favorite repeats are sleeping and first place (last year it was called “winning”). New additions are soccer, chocolate and Pete the Cat.

We started his day the same way that all little birthdays commence around these parts… with a pancake breakfast.

Much to the baby’s surprise and delight, Mommy wasn’t the only visitor at school for lunch today… DADDY CAME TOO!!!!!!! And I loved that Whit insisted that Honey buy and eat his very own school lunch. I’ve had to do that way too many times.

I intended to be the science lab volunteer for his class today but when it was cancelled I got a much better job – hanging with the kids at recess, passing out chocolate birthday cupcakes with “every color of sprinkles” AND reading a book. I’d pass up science lab any day for all that fun!!

We continued the celebration tonight over a Japanese dinner. Whit was SO excited about his surprise dinner guests – Jay Bird and family!!!!!

And we wrapped up our evening seeing Big Hero 6. I was skeptical, but it was such a GREAT movie and I already want to see it again!!

I can say with absolute honesty that I never wanted anything in my entire life like I wanted Whit. At first glance I loved him with a thousand hearts.

  1. Happy, happy 6th birthday, Whit! You are a shining star and bring such joy to the world!

Sending wishes all the way from the west coast, Jane ~ San Diego, California :-)

  2. So sweet. And I know without knowing what those last few lines mean…you wanted him with your whole heart…and more. Happy birthday Whit!!!! I also agree that with your youngest you do cling to it. I wish I could stop time every single day.

  3. I know how you feel! I can't believe my first born is 24 and my little Ben is 5. I want him to stay little forever-I know selfish but now a kiss makes everything better, a hug fixes hurt feelings and you can make them laugh so easily. The problems get harder, harder to help them with the older the are. Happy Birthday Whit! Enjoy being 6!!

  4. Happy Birthday to Whit! And believe me you will always wonder how your children get to be any age! My oldest just turned 36 and it seems like yesterday that he was born! I say Big Hero with the Grands and I loved it too. Who can resist a movie where nerds are the heroes???

  5. I didn't really want to see Big Hero 6, but I loved it! My 14 year old daughter is obsessed now, it's so funny. I love how you enjoy and celebrate your children, it does go way too fast.
