Port Orleans Riverside + Downtown Disney

FOR A MORE CURRENT REVIEW OF DISNEY’S PORT ORLEANS RIVERSIDE, LOOK HERE!

Daddy-O asked Sister and I if we’d be up for surprising Mother with her first trip to Disney in more than 20 years as a surprise Christmas and birthday gift.  Twist my arm, why don’t you?!?!  We were DELIGHTED!!!!  And so we’re just now back from a fabulous four days in the World!!!  Since we were aiming for a relaxed and fun trip down memory lane, we only took Whit and Jay with us. (Don’t feel bad for John…he proclaimed his weekend of pizza, donuts, no bedtimes, no chores and all the video games he could take as “one of the best weekends of my life”.) We checked into Port Orleans Riverside on Friday afternoon, unpacked and then took a sunset riverboat cruise over to Downtown Disney.  (Since we just stayed there in November, I will spare you all a full recap.  But, if interested, you can find my review here.  For what it’s worth, this one is still my favorites of the moderates.)DSC00036

It’s a lovely little boat ride, going from Port Orleans Riverside, past the mansions and on to Port Orleans French Quarter.  After that you can see the Treehouse Villas of Saratoga Springs and then the West Side and Marketplace of Downtown Disney.

We’ve enjoyed quite a few prehistoric meals at the T-Rex Café.  It’s really remarkable to visit, but Jay was pretty scared so if you have little ones afraid of screeching and moving dinosaurs you might want to pass.  However, if an adventurous dinner is right up your alley, I definitely suggest trying it out!  The food is good and portions are large and definitely big enough to share (the three girls split a huge salad and flatbread and the boys shared a kids meal).  I’ve NEVER been able to get a reservation, but have always gotten in.  Make it your first stop in Downtown Disney and get your name on the list.  You can wait it out by visiting the Lego Store next door, watching the river, in the bar, in the store, or in the little dinosaur dig area adjacent to the store.

Before leaving for the night, we did some shopping in the World of Disney (absolutely the best) and hung out for a while in the Lego Store.

Since it was chilly, we took the bus back and got in bed to prepare for a full two days in the Magic Kingdom!!!

  1. That sounds like a great holiday. We went to Disney for our honeymoon in 1992 and I'm pretty sure this is the same resort that was called Dixie Landings (and new at the time.) We returned in 2008, with kids this time, but stayed at Wilderness Lodge (deluxe.) Loved both our trips and would do it again.

  2. Looks like you all had such a great time! We leave Tues.for WDW for a visit to the Mouse House and to see my son and daughter-in-law.Hoping we will have good weather.Have a lovely rest of the week..hugs…

  3. I was actually about to go back and look through all of your Disney posts to see if you have ever stayed at Coronado Springs or Caribbean Beach, because we are planning another trip to Disney this fall! Also, we are planning on going to the Halloween Party, and I have tons of questions about that! Love that you are back at Port Orleans Riverside. I loved that resort and I kind of want to stay there again, but the husband said he wants to try another one!

Can't wait to read more about your trip!
