Baseball

For a kid who didn’t decide to play baseball until the very last minute, Whit had his best season ever! He was a last minute registrant, after the official registration period was over and evaluations had passed even, that signed up only when Honey’s friends in the league asked if he could “just play to even things out to 100 kids in the program.”

He had the very best time and just clicked with his coach and team mates. He had a few home runs, was fierce on first base and has FOUR game balls to show for it!

In fact, their team was undefeated in the regular season!!! The tourney got the best of them, but the numbers speak for themselves!

As team mom, part of my duties were to organize the end of season party. We had a simple dinner last Wednesday night on one of the pavilions / playgrounds at our ball park. Dollar Tree balloons with their names and numbers on them weren’t just festive party décor, but doubled as party favors.

I did a Chick-fil-A nugget tray, chips and fruit and veggie trays from Costco for food. And I always adore being on the team with the S family… not just because of her AMAZING cakes, but because they are super funny, kind, family oriented people that you can’t help but love.

The baby was all smiles when his coach recapped his season. I had to blink back the tears for this one.

And, speaking of his coach, he was just one of the best we’ve ever had for any sport team for either kid ever. He really differentiated in his coaching, always stayed calm and positive, and put a huge emphasis on sportsmanship and being a great team mate. He went above in beyond in every sense – both on and off the field. I was especially touched by the personalized letters he wrote to each kid. Coaches can play a critical role in the life of our kids and I’d give my left arm to have him draft Whit again. Lucky for us, we should get to hang with him and his sweet fam bam at the pool this summer. They aren’t rid of the W family yet :-)

He put in countless hours and opened his wallet up many times for batting cages on rainy days and the likes. Again… above and beyond. I collected money from the team and was able to make a donation in his name to Coaches Curing Kids Cancer. He got a lovely certificate and a pretty cool tee to boot! On top of that, we treated him to a big gift card to his fave sporting goods store, had all the kids sign the team banner for him AND gave him a sweet framed photo from the season.

This was a great season of baseball and I’m SO glad we were talked into letting him “even out the teams.” At the time, one more sport to keep up with seemed overwhelming. But he loved every second of it and that makes the practices, games and loooooong season more than worth it!

Go Rockies!
