Elsa Tails {Bone Appetit}

The last thing I did before being taken down with the appendix was help Whit make home made treats for miss Elsa.

They were so much fun to make together and were much easier than regular cut-out “human” cookies.  Bestie S picked up the Coton Colors bone mini attachment for my Happy Everything plate, and That Southern Chick had her name on it before I could blink.

The recipe is simple and all of the four ingredients are safe for puppy tummies.  I did my research :-)  I used the medium sized bone cookie cutter from this set.

Peanutbutter-Pumpkin Bones

2/3 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup peanut butter (no sugar added)
2 large eggs
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting (rice flour is also a good option)

  • Preheat oven to 350. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Gradually add 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. If needed, add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky.
  • Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.  Using a fork, gently imprint the middle of each bone.
  • Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.  Let cool completely.

These two could hardly wait for the treats to be done!

Just as soon as they had cooled off, Elsa was ready to dig in!  She scarfed them down like we’d been starving her.  There was no doubt that she loved them.

I should have guessed this would happen, but both of the littles sampled them as well.  It was only a matter of time before they tried dog food for themselves, I suppose.

One batch made more than Elsa could eat on her own, so we treated some of our favorite canine friends to a bag as well.  Click here to download the Free Printable Treat Topper.  It is designed to fit on top of a cello bag with a 4″ opening at the top.  I included the ingredients on the back because if there’s one thing I’ve learned since getting Elsa, people are picky about the pups.

  1. Love that picture of her looking in the oven! I will have to try these for Rosie. At the moment she is on a diet though. I think we spoiled her too much this summer. The vet told me she should be around 65 pounds for her body frame and she is 75! Lately, she is only having raw broccoli for treats. But once she slims down I will definitely make your treats. Pumpkin is great for their digestion. I have given her a spoonful of it when she has any tummy issues. Enjoy your week and that little fluffball!

  2. I have a similar recipe. I like to use small shape cookie cutters ~ I have a heart, bone and fire hydrant I use for dog cookies. Oh, and yeah, I’ve tasted them too … even good with some Nutella spread on them! lol. Thanks for sharing the recipe and cute photos!

  3. These are so adorable!

I just saw this article yesterday (http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/xylitol-now-found-certain-peanut-and-nut-butters) and wanted to share as you may want to add a little disclaimer to your recipe. It seems some manufacturers have started adding Xylitol to their peanut/nut butters, which is very toxic to dogs.

Just wanted to share since peanut butter has always been a go-to dog treat (and my favorite way to force feed puppy pills!) and I’m sure most people wouldn’t think to double check the ingredients.
