One Room Challenge: Powder Room {Before & After}

Well, time flies when you’re having fun.  Six weeks have come to a close and it’s time for the big reveal!  First things first, I like to start these kinds of things with a before shot…

and the first update

the vision

and the goals:

  1. An updated space that makes a nice transition from my preppy pink and colorful family office to the rest of the main level.  This little powder room gets a lot of use and opens onto the main downstairs hallway AND the family office.
  2. A neutral and timeless foundation with accessories that add pops of color and can be changed out as tastes change.  I have used this philosophy throughout my home.  Neutral walls, neutral floor coverings and neutral furniture.  I want to do the same here, but layer touches pink (to tie in the office) and turquoise (to transition to the rest of the house.)

and the after

Before we go any further, I want to acknowledge that my very basic photography skills were really put to the test in this itsy bitsy space with zero natural light.  It really looks so much lovelier in person.  With that disclaimer out of the way… here’s the rest!

There’s no doubting that the wallpaper is the really stunner in the room.  I mean, I could wrap myself up in it and spend the rest of my days in happiness.  It’s just lovely!  Aside from the walls, the chandelier is definitely my favorite change.  Moving the light from the wall to the ceiling made all the difference in the world in making the ceilings appear taller.  The mirror is such a better fit than the tiny one I was forced to have before.

As far as the little details, I made the shelf out of two corbels and half of a stair from Home Depot.  I had intended to put two shelves in here, but it didn’t work out to have enough room between the back of a head sitting on the potty and where the bottom shelf would have needed to go.  Mother painted the monogram for me and I truly couldn’t love it more.  I made the box (storing spare tissue) and promise to show y’all how real soon.

I replaced the towel bar with an amazing lucite and matte brass one.  The oyster plates were all in here previously.  I added the striped towels with my monogram.

I also replaced the knobs on the vanity with matching lucite and brass pulls.  I’m really glad Sister and Mother talked me into this splurge!

I’ve had this bee in my bonnet to float a print between two pieces of lucite for ages, and this was the perfect opportunity to give it a whirl.  Honey has promised to share the details on this DIY fix real soon.

I laughed so hard when I pulled the tag off of the bottom of the new trash can to see the original tag proclaimed it a wine bucket.  There’s nothing like a multi purpose accessory.  :-)

  1. Amanda, it is lovely – the wallpaper, mirror & chandelier absolutely make the space. What a sweet new addition to your home!

  2. I love it and can’t wait to see the DIY on the lucite frame. I have also had a “bee in my bonnet” about doing this after seeing a fabulous piece displayed that way in a friends home. The only trouble has been that I need it to be really large (and then the frame becomes pricey, even without the art). I will be curious to read how you DIY’ed!

  3. It’s just beautiful! That wallpaper is gorgeous especially with the pretty artwork you chose. I have my eye on a piece or two of Emily’s art. Can’t wait to see how you made the tissues box. It’s the little things you know. :)

  4. I am thrilled to see this room crossed off your list. That paper is so you, the mirror is de-vine and that chandy … hubba hubba!!! This was a journey for sure and I am thrilled we walked it together. xo

  5. It’s beautiful, Amanda! Really love the wallpaper. I felt the same way about my photography; tiny space and no natural light source. But yours look great! Congrats on finishing and producing a wonderful ORC!

  6. I am running out the door and haven’t even read the text but … WOW! Gorgeousness all around! Once you hang a “No Boys Allowed” sign, you’ll be all set! You deserve to claim this space as your own. :-) It’s beautiful, Amanda. Simply perfect in every way!

  7. So fabulous. I’ve been in love with the paper since day 1!!! It’s amazing and every detail is perfect. Love the big art!!! And seriously about photographing bathrooms. We did a bathroom and it has 3 mirrors in it and trying to get photos and stay out of the mirrors was like Circque de Soleil acrobatics!!! :)

  8. I LOVE this powder room, and I hear you loud and clear on photographing with no natural light (I did a powder room last time and a laundry closet this time… both without any natural light). I think your photos look gorgeous. I love the wall paper and all the accents. Great job!

  9. Love the wallpaper…it was one of the ones I almost used in my sisters foyer! You did a great job and it’s so personalized….love the monogramed towels and the art work! Fantastic job!

  10. Stunning wallpaper! The trash/wine container is a lovely addition :). You had me laughing at the ‘after the rose’ because everyone can relate to that. Great job and how sweet of your mom and sister to support you. Well done.

  11. This is really amazing. Designs are really good, I am surprised to see these bold patterns are looking really stunning in the powder room. Thank you for sharing this amazing thing. Keep posting such things.
