Happy Mardi Gras!! I picked out the most green, gold and purple outfit in my closet and donned the charm bracelet Daddy-O made me years ago for the occasion. (This dress is current in the Lilly girls section!)
My knee is still really bothering me and I knew I didn’t want to be on my feet all day making dinner from scratch. I had high hopes of picking up some frozen jambalaya and a king cake at Trader Joe’s but that was a total bust. Running up against the bus time, I popped in Publix but they were sold out of king cake and I had to just abandon the whole mission. I thought for a minute about just not even bringing up Fat Tuesday but then I barely recognized myself. Sooooo, I dropped the littles at lacrosse this evening and headed back to the grocery store to see what I could pull together. We ended up with red beans and rice from a box (mixed in italian chicken sausage) and my King Krispie cake of yore. The whole shebang took under 30 minutes and everyone gobbled it up!
I set the table with a wrapping paper runner I had in the closet and beads and doubloons that I keep in a tub in the attic.
When Honey got home with the littles they were SO EXCITED!!!! I really didn’t do a whole lot here, but it truly brightened their day. <3
We talked a lot about Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday and Lent and how it all ties together during dinner. AND the littles are dead set on getting a real King Cake from NOLA next year. I am SO in for that!!
Happy Mardi Gras, y’all!

I’m sorry to hear your knee is still hurting – hoping that’s better sooner rather than later! This is the perfect weeknight celebration! I love that your boys still love it! Laissez lesbon temps rouler! xo
I love following your blog – our favorite king cake is from Haydel’s bakery in New Orleans. While it has a plastic baby your boys can search for, it also includes a collectible porcelain baby that makes a wonderful keepsake for simple mardingras decorations.
Each year they create two styles and rotate each week with which is shipped out.
If you go this route – and have a preference – call ahead to find out which one they are shipping and adjust your order.
Lastly, while it’s surprising to most, ‘mardinGras in New Orleans is mostly a family affair. To get them in the spirit all the parades are live streamed with commentary on YouTube and NOLA.com.
Thank you so much for the tips!!! I JUST marked my calendar with a reminder for next year so we don’t miss out :-)
Our favorite is Haydels because we love the collectible porcelain figure each year, however Sucre has a fabulous king cake too!
We always order our King Cakes Haydel’s Bakery. I choose to have it shipped with delivery on Tuesday. Get the King size as your kiddos will gobble them up as they are delicious and better than anything we can get here in Atlanta IMO! They include a bunch of beads and coins in the box, too and this year also had a CD of Mardi Gras music which was fun to hear playing in the background while we enjoyed the King Cake. Hope your knee improves……
That’s SO good to know. Haydel’s seems to be THE place to get them!
“i barely recognized myself” hahahahaha! love you!
Love you too. Your postcard in my box literally MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!!
So sorry your knee is still bothering you. Praying you’re on the mend soon. And, even last minute you always manage to pull off a fun evening for your kiddos.
Thanks girlie. As it turns out I sprained my MCL. Amanda + exercise = no bueno
I have a Haydel’s cake shipped to Wisconsin each year–totally worth $63!
I always order one from Haydel’s and it is totally worth the $63! I have also made this one, and it tastes exactly like Haydel’s https://zagleft.com/recipe/traditional-mardi-gras-king-cake-recipe/
YUM!!! I tried to make one years ago and it wasn’t good. Will def try this recipe but really thinking I’ll order next year.
This recipe is fool proof. Yours might not be as pretty, but it tastes exactly the same as Haydels…and so darn yummy!
