Southern Road Trips

As the boys have gotten older we have had so much fun exploring other cities that are just a drive away from Atlanta and many parts of the South.  I get asked about this a lot and thought I would share four recent favorites.  Each of these have full day-by-day itineraries, reviews and suggestions!

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

Savannah is my home and the place I love more than any!  We are fortunate to have my parents still there and my sister’s new beach place at Tybee.

CHARLOTTE NC

Charlotte is so much more than NASCAR, although that was a whole lot of fun too!  We absolutely loved our day at the US National Whitewater Center and exploring the rest of the City.

COLUMBIA SC

The city is so easy to navigate that it makes it easy to pack in a lot in just a little bit of time.

TOUR OF TENNESSEE

We packed up for a week and headed off on a road trip hitting the highlights of everything there is to do, see, eat and experience in the Volunteer State! It was one of our most memorable family vacations so far.

ATLANTA GA

And, for those of you not here in Atlanta, here are some of our favorite things to do in our own home town!

Now, I would LOVE to know if y’all have any favorite southern road trip destinations.  We keep a running list of all the places we hope to visit one day!

And, before I run these boys to the pool, I want to say how incredibly grateful I was yesterday for your love and support on my announcement.  I couldn’t ask for a more caring group of readers in this blog world.  THANK YOU!!!

  1. I SO enjoy following along on your road trips! We are also big southeast road-trippers; I love watching your trips because I feel like I’m getting the best scoop on places we haven’t been yet! xo

  2. I love that you turn your lacrosse travel weekends into a mini vacay! I have 3 on travel lax teams and 1 on a travel cheer team and I’m going to make a better effort to make the most of our weekends and explore the cities. It would be quite a hike from Atlanta, but the Outer Banks of NC would be fun and educational…Jockey’s Ridge (fly kites, sand board, hang glide), Wright Bros. Memorial, Ft. Raleigh Park, fishing at Jeanette’s Pier, numerous lighthouses, and The Lost Colony outdoor play (summer only).

    1. My family just got back from Outer Banks and I would go back this week if I could! It was beautiful, peaceful and full of so many interesting things…don’t forget to add The Lost Colony play to your list as well as the aquarium…and hopefully there will be full access to Shelly Island which just formed the week we were there!

  3. Oh, and this isn’t a southern road trip, but in a few years you must venture out west (Zion, Bryce, Moab, Mesa Verde, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon and Sedona). We did a two week trip last summer (kids were 18, 16, 13 and 11) and it was AMAZING.

  4. My dream road trip is Route 66 from one end to the other, stopping at all of the silly touristy places. I would love to take the trip in a convertible or a jeep, but with my over packing addiction I feel the minivan will be our chariot of choice.

  5. I love your blog and my family has made two trips to Disney World since I started reading it but will ya’ll ever explore all the other things there are to do in the Orlando area?

And since we are from Memphis, St Louis is one of our favorite road trip destinations. We make the 4.5 hour trip every summer to catch a St. Louis Cardinals game, Grant’s Farm (the original estate of the Anheuser-Busch family), City Museum (your boys would love it), Six Flags, and there is more we haven’t had a chance to do.

We are headed to Dallas for fall break to visit Six Flags Over Texas, the Dallas Zoo, Dallas World Aquarium, the Sixth Floor Museum (my soon to be 5th grader should be touching on JFK soon), and whatever else we can fit in.

  6. Love this recap!!

Have you ever been to Charleston, SC? I’ve heard it is quite charming and the food is supposed to be excellent! It is on our short list, but I’d love to hear your tips if you’ve been!
