Zinus Mattress + Other Bedding Necessities

After an exhaustive search both online and in stores, we finally chose a mattress for John’s new room.  (If you missed the news, the sweet twin beds are gone and we are doing a “tween” update.)  We finally settled on the Zinus 12 Inch Gel-Infused Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress from Amazon.  It was $299 for a queen with free shipping and came in two days.  It also has a 4.5 star rating with 1,500 reviews on Amazon alone!  I know that a mattress is very personal, and I also know it sounds crazy to buy one online, but for an eleven year old, it seemed like a good fit.  :-)

So, here’s how it all went down…  it arrived compressed and rolled in a box.  It seemed like I could just tote it right upstairs, but it was actually quite heavy.  It passed Elsa’s initial inspection so we were off to a good start.

We carried it up to John’s room and cleared out a big space on the floor.  As soon as Honey took it out of the bag it popped open.  When he cut the plastic it immediately started expanding.  It is recommended to leave it alone with no linens for 24 – 48 hours so we left it on the floor and made sure no pet or child touched it.  I was envisioning a brand new mattress with the permanent indention of a dog in the middle of it.  HA!  I read that it has a funny smell for the first day or two and did notice that.  But, it was completely gone by the time we put it on the bed 24 hours later.

As far as a box spring, I went ahead and ordered the Zinus 5 Inch Low Profile Smart Box Spring.  The box spring comes in a variety of depths, and I generally like a tall, fluffy bed, but when I measured the mattress depth plus the box spring, I was careful not to cover up the pretty headboard in its entirety.  So, I was glad they had this low profile version and it was only $85.  Now, this came in a long rectangular box and had to be assembled.  Honey worked on it for a while – he said it was easy, but took some time.  The majority of it is a steel structure like this.

And then you zip it up in a cover to look like a regular box spring!

We got everything on the bed but had to wait for the sheets to come before sleeping on it, so that got us solidly to the 48 hour mark.

I also did some research on mattress pads and, man, like the mattress there are WAY too many options.  I realize this is a really exciting topic, but it is something everyone needs, right?!  I ended up with this SafeRest option from Amazon.  I liked it because it is waterproof and also protects against dust, allergens, and bacteria.  It said it would be noiseless and breathable  – and it is!  And, it had 4.5 stars with over 25,000 reviews.

Lastly, his pillows were in awful shape so I went ahead and threw two new ones in the cart.  (Does anyone else have a problem cutting off the spending once you start?!)  I picked these luxury gel pillows and they are so nice that I’m going to get two more for my bed.  I think our pillows might be as bad as his were.  Yikes.

Before I go… a mattress review.  I have not been allowed to sleep in the bed (ha!) but I have read in there to give it a try while he is studying.  It’s nice!  Firm but not hard, comfy when on my side and back and doesn’t seem to generate heat.  He loves it and that is really what matters.  We need a new mattress for our bed soon and I’m going to try his bed out the next time he has a sleepover.  You really can’t beat the price.  The only thing I will say is that it slides around on the bed a little.  My boys like to get a running start and dive into bed so this one always looks a little askew.  Of course, if you are a normal person that just falls in to the bed exhausted at night, you likely won’t have this problem.  *wink*

  1. Hi Amanda,

We had the same slippery mattress issue. I got a rug gripper/floor protector for a 5×7 rug (not adhesive) and put it between the mattresses. It worked perfectly!

    mbh

  2. I was glad to read this! We are in the market for 3 new mattresses and I have absolutely no idea where to start. Will definitely be checking these out! xo

  3. This is random….and I have never tried it myself but what if you put one of those thin rug pads where is slips to keep it in place?

  4. Great minds think alike! Just saw that someone suggested the same thing! Glad to hear it works!!!

  5. You won’t believe this but we just received the same mattress today! What a coincidence ;) We just opened it and letting it expand. Looking forward to using it.

  6. You won’t believe this but we just received the exact same mattress today! What a coincidence ;) We just opened it and letting it expand. Looking forward to using it.

  7. I am so glad you like that one. LIke I mentioned in the DM I sent you on Insta, we got one for the camper and one for Andrew’s bunk bed, and we have been very pleased with it. We figured for the price, you can’t beat it! If it gets uncomfortable after 3 years, no big deal, just replace it! It’s still cheaper than spending $2000 on a regular mattress from the furniture store that lasts for 6 or so years!

and I’m a nut about pillows. I replace pillows every 6 months usually. I’m really picky about sheets and pillows. It used to drive Scott nuts, but now he appreciates my attention to that detail. :)

    1. I think I’ve just overlooked the pillows :-) I am def getting new ones for my bed! Thanks for your help with the mattress :-)

  8. We too used a non-slip pad under ours. I just used the shelf liner that has a grip-ey feel to it and it worked. We just got a very similar mattress & I was pleasantly surprised. Our middle daughter graduated from college & got a job in Atlanta and we let her take her good mattress with her. In looking for a replacement, I didn’t want to spend a lot since it will only be slept on a few times a year. I added a plush, almost pillow-top-type mattress pad & it is super comfortable.

  9. Glad to see this. We are in mattress research mode for our 5th grader.

    Overwhelming options!

    Wondering how side/edge support is.
Can you sit on edge without sliding off?

    Very happy for John!

Ps – ben’s chili bowl & old ebbet’s grill when in DC

    1. You can sit on the edge. I really want to sleep on it for a night because I need a new mattress for my bed as well. Adding those to my list for sure in DC!

  10. Hi! Thanks for all that info, we have a place in Ocean City NJ & this looks like a perfect option for the price. I love the bed frame too—is that new? Thanks, always a fun, informative read @ your blog!

  11. P.S. — Amanda, my husband was snoring loudly last night, and I felt bad to nudge him because I knew he had to get up super early this morning, so I got up and slept on the new mattress that is the same idea as the one you just got for John. It was SOOOOO comfortable! That was a great purchase! I hope you will love yours too when you can sneak in there to sleep when John’s not around :) :)

    1. Oh my gosh, I just took the mattress box out w/the trash and in looking closer, I see that it is the Zinus brand, and it says something about green-tea-something-or-other. So I bet they are the same. Two days ago
hub came down with a nasty cold, so I slept on the guest bed the past 2 nights since I cannot get sick, and I tell you it is super comfortable!
