Easy Peanut Butter + Chocolate Heart Cookies

I used to make these super easy and pretty darn yummy cookies every year around Valentine’s Day but somewhere along the way they fell off my radar.  I was shopping with Whit after school the other day and he asked to get peanut butter cookie mix .  It was quite serendipitous seeing as the Dove Hearts are out right now for Valentine’s Day!  I told him about adding the chocolates and he was game.

Peanut Butter + Chocolate Heart Cookies

1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker peanut butter cookie mix
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon water
1 egg
2 tablespoons sugar
Bag of heart-shaped Dove chocolates (I love the dark chocolate most)

  • Heat oven to 375°F. In medium bowl, stir cookie mix, oil, water and egg until dough forms.
  • Shape dough into 36 (1-inch) balls; roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Immediately press chocolate candy into top of each cookie. Remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks. Cool completely, about 20 minutes, before storing in tightly covered container.

We only got 24 cookies out of ours, but I think they were perfectly sized!  Also, go ahead and use the time while the cookies bake to unwrap the chocolates so that they get pressed into the cookies while still piping hot.

This recipe is really easy and something the kids can very handily help out with.

Have a great week ahead!

  1. These are always the best and I hadn’t had them forever. So, last last night I made a batch (from the Hershey’s Kisses recipe…followed to a “T”) to give to the neighbor children with crazy LOVE straws (from Michael’s) but they were so dry. :-( Has anyone else had this problem? Next year, I will follow your trick and just use a mix. I can’t figure it out.

Anyway, Happy Valentine’s Day to the sweetest blogger ever!!! I can’t wait to give my husband his monogrammed mug and finally use my mouse one! Thanks, Amanda. XOXO

    1. Hi Jane, I used to make them from scratch and they were definitely on the thinner, crispier side. For these you bake them in a ball and I think that helps over the traditional way of smashing them down with a fork before putting in the oven. I didn’t have trouble with these being dry but the mix turned out perfectly!! I hope he enjoys his mug even though it isn’t a surprise like you had hoped. <3 xoxo
