Walk of Fame 2018

The years seem to be speeding by faster than ever as the boys get older.  I love that they are growing up, as children should.  But I do miss having them come home together.  Along with the other slew of moms at the bus stop, when the elementary aged kids arrived home we attacked them with silly string, water balloons and water guns… that is, until they attacked us.  HA!

Sufficiently water logged, and after the other kids started on their way to the “after party”, it was time for Whit’s Walk of Fame.  We’ve tried a lot of traditions around here…some stick and others don’t.  But the last day of school Walk of Fame, my most favorite of all, is one I’ll do forever.  It’s not elaborate or expensive, but it makes me happier, prouder and more excited than any of the others and is a small thing to remind the boys of how big they are loved.  I line the driveway or sidewalk with signs touting their accomplishments, both in and out of the classroom, from the past year.

Since they were coming home at different times, I simply replaced Whit’s signs with John’s when the time came.

Whit and I devised a sneak attack for John’s Walk of Fame since he is carpool this year and didn’t have a bus stop full of fun to come home to.  We got him good with silly string!

In the midst of our celebratory breakfast, I forgot to take their obligatory last day of school pictures before school.  I strong armed them into posing for me before we split up to head to their respective parties…  I really, truly couldn’t feel more blessed to call these two my kids.

I know y’all don’t see a lot of John around here any more but he continues to make us proud.  He was okay with me sharing this little update on life for him after sixth grade… :-)

With that, and you MUST sing this, SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!   We have no camps planned and the kids intend to spend their days playing Fortnite and swimming between lacrosse (John) and swim team (Whit).  It sounds pretty perfect to me!

  1. I adapted your Walk of Fame a year ago and lined our driveway with stakes of my oldest’s school photos from K-12 (8x10s mounted on colored cardstock), leading up to his senior photo, for his graduation. My second child graduates in two weeks and I’m doing the same for him:)

  2. This is always, always my favorite post of the year. What a lot they’ve accomplished this year! I know how very proud you are! xo

  3. I love that you put “Made new friends for Whit”! I have a serious, introverted kid and it’s taken him until end of junior year to say he’s starting to feel like an extrovert! Make sure Whit has a standing “friend day” each week over summer….and not with children of your friends. :)

    1. You know, I have tried to be very intentional about having him invite over who he wants to when he wants to. He is pretty independent and quiet and is happy being alone. With a big brother that is always talking about his friends, I know it can be hard. I let him know that you really only need one good friend. As you get older you naturally learn that, but as a kid quantity seems better than quality.

  4. Your Walk of Fame was one of the earliest features I saw when I first found Dixie Delights so long ago. Though we’ve never met over sweet tea (or honeysuckle vodka!), you are dear to me, Amanda. So much so, that I feel a little melancholy this morning, seeing how fast time flies but I’m happy to learn that you will always continue this fun and meaningful traidtion. The accomplishment belong to you and Honey, as well. <3. HAPPY SUMMER!!!

    1. Awww, thank you Jane!! Time does fly. But, and I know you know this, they are growing up as they should. It’s bittersweet at times but I’m so glad they get to grow up. <3

  5. I love this idea of yours; a few years ago I shared it with two friends and they do it with their littles! It won’t be long before you are doing it for John’s senior year! I did a version (hung the signs mixed with photos from alligator clips on a wire) for my son’s graduation party last year! Enjoy your summer.

  6. Love this tradition. I do something similar. Our last days are upon us!

I think John should be really proud of himself. He had that half year that could have just changed his way of thinking, learning, or even how he would treat others. He continues to flourish!

Whit is the baby but goodness not much longer. 4th grade is legit! :)

    Happy Summer!!!!

    1. It is so true. I think learning what he did so young will serve him well, as awful as it was to live through. I keep telling him he won’t be able to skate by on his cute face and baby blues next year. lol.

  7. congratulations, guys! they are just so darling. and polite!!! you and honey are doing an amazing job. :)
