On My Bedside {The Peachtree Bluff Series}

If you have been looking for the PERFECT light, entertaining summer read, I have to recommend The Peachtree Bluff Series by Kristy Woodson Harvey.  There are two books in The Peachtree Bluff Series, Slightly South of Simple and The Secret to Southern Charm,  featuring a trio of sisters and their mother set in a sleepy Southern coastal town.  I read both on our big trip last week!

Slightly South of Simple

From the next “major voice in Southern fiction” (New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand) comes the first in an all-new series chronicling the journeys of three sisters and their mother—and a secret from their past that has the potential to tear them apart and reshape their very definition of what it means to be a family.

Caroline Murphy swore she’d never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father’s death, her mother selfishly forced her to move—during her senior year of high school, no less—back to that hick-infested rat trap where she’d spent her childhood summers. But now that her marriage to a New York high society heir has fallen apart in a very public, very embarrassing fashion, a pregnant Caroline decides to escape the gossipmongers with her nine-year-old daughter and head home to her mother, Ansley.

Ansley has always put her three daughters first, especially when she found out that her late husband, despite what he had always promised, left her with next to nothing. Now the proud owner of a charming waterfront design business and finally standing on her own two feet, Ansley welcomes Caroline and her brood back with open arms. But when her second daughter Sloane, whose military husband is overseas, and youngest daughter and successful actress Emerson join the fray, Ansley begins to feel like the piece of herself she had finally found might be slipping from her grasp. Even more discomfiting, when someone from her past reappears in Ansley’s life, the secret she’s harbored from her daughters their entire lives might finally be forced into the open.

Exploring the powerful bonds between sisters and mothers and daughters, this engaging novel is filled with Southern charm, emotional drama, and plenty of heart.

The Secret to Southern Charm

After finding out her military husband is missing in action, middle sister Sloane’s world crumbles as her worst nightmare comes true. She can barely climb out of bed, much less summon the strength to be the parent her children deserve.

Her mother, Ansley, provides a much-needed respite as she puts her personal life on hold to help Sloane and her grandchildren wade through their new grief-stricken lives. But between caring for her own aging mother, her daughters, and her grandchildren, Ansley’s private worry is that secrets from her past will come to light.

But when Sloane’s sisters, Caroline and Emerson, remind Sloane that no matter what, she promised her husband she would carry on for their young sons, Sloane finds the support and courage she needs to chase her biggest dreams—and face her deepest fears. Taking a cue from her middle daughter, Ansley takes her own leap of faith and realizes that, after all this time, she might finally be able to have it all.

I enjoyed every word on every page and was invested in the characters and their stories just pages into the first book.  Add these to your beach bags and bedside tables this summer for sure!

And, as always, I would love to know what is on YOUR summer reading list!

  1. You need to read Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter and Yankee Doodle Dixie by Lisa Patton! They are fantastic light hearted and entertaining books. I read the first one after moving to Maryland with my Yankee husband and going through my first Nor’easter so it definitely hit home at the time!

  2. I have just started reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman. It has received raves reviews but I’m having a hard time really getting in to it. I’ve only had time for sporadic reading this week, so that could be the reason why I’m having trouble committing. Going to keep at it—I just can’t start a book and not finish it!!!

  3. I love Kristy!!! You need to read her first 2 novels before she started the Peachtree Bluff trio! I cannot wait for the final installment of Peachtree Bluff and see what she comes up with next.

  4. I need to put both of these on my list. Years ago I read Luanne Rice’s books, and I love them. Great summer reads set in coastal towns. Sometimes characters make a reappearance.

  5. I read these during my last beach trip & really enjoyed them too! I can’t get enough of books by Susan Meissner right now! I LOVED Secrets of a Charmed Life & Stars over Sunset Boulevard!! We’re traveling to NYC in August so I’m currently devouring A Fall of Marigolds. I love her writing so much that I’m anxious to read everything she’s written!! I highly recommend!

  6. Thank you for the book recommendations. I needed some ligh5 summer reading and I have three grown daughters so this is perfect. On a different subject, I seem to recall that you once mention purchasing a shampoo bar, had given it a try and liked it. I was wondering if after using it a while you would recommend it. If so, what brand do you like. Thanks.

  7. Both of these sound fun – perfect for summer! I’m currently reading Eight Hundred Grapes, and I’m enjoying it so far. Thanks for sharing! xo

  8. I’m reading Prairie Fires: The American Dreams if Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser. It is the story of her true life mixed in with the historical events of the time. Having grown up obsessed with Little House on the Prairie I am finding this book so interesting. It isn’t light, summer, beach-type reading, but it’s good!
