Patriotic Summer Dessert Centerpiece

I am excited to be back hosting a Summer-inspired progressive dinner party with some of my favorite bloggers!  If you’re joining me from one of the other ladies in the series, welcome.  I’m delighted you’re here!  You can learn more about me and this little piece of the internet HERE.  I’m serving an easy summer dessert spread that plays double duty as your centerpiece!

Summer Patriotic Porch Party

Without further ado, let’s head out to my porch.  My neighborhood goes all out for the Fourth of July with a parade, pool party and huge fireworks show in the evening.  We love to invite friends and neighbors over for dinner before the night time festivities and I will be re-using this shortcake bar for the event!  You can take the full tour of the porch and find all of the sources in this post.

With the dessert spread on the table, I’ve employed the buffet for infused water (strawberry lavender and lime mint), plates, cups, napkins and cutlery.  The hydrangeas were all clipped from my yard.

I fell in love with the details and colors on this Georgia pillow and thought it was perfect to move outdoors with my patriotic decor.  There are other states available and they are a great price at about $21 with free shipping.  I also purchased the North Pole version for the holidays!

Easy Summer Centerpiece

Now, the idea to use dessert as a centerpiece was originally born with my Spring Dessert – a pound cake spread.  It was such a hit with readers and my girlfriends that came to party that I decided to use it again for a summer soiree.

The board itself is from Home Depot and is an inexpensive piece of pine, already sized at the perfect length for my table.  These hydrangeas are also from my yard and I think the mason jar containers embody summer. You can find my flower arranging video and tips in this post and my tips for working with hydrangeas specifically in this post.

Deconstructed Shortcake Bar

For the actual dessert part, the board contained a buffet of red, white and blue fruit, homemade whipped cream, assorted other bites and homemade shortcake biscuits.  My thought was that some may want to assemble the shortcakes and others may go with just a fresh fruit plate.

I made the shortcakes from Ina Garten’s recipe.  They were very good and I would definitely do them again.  I only used one carton of each fruit.  The board is skinny and a little goes a long way.

Here are the fruit and toppings I used:

  • shortcakes
  • triple almond cookies (Trader Joe’s)
  • strawberries – some with sugar and some also with grand marnier
  • red grapes
  • blueberries
  • raspberries – some with raspberry liquor
  • blackberries
  • cherries
  • whole plums
  • praline pecans (Trader Joes)
  • fresh mint
  • whipped cream

I set this up Sunday morning and took pictures and then put everything away until Sunday night when my neighborhood girls came over again for girl talk, dessert and prosecco! I loved that everything can be prepared ahead of time and just pulled out at the time of the party.

You can see all the details from my Spring Party here!

Now, hop on over to the other ladies to see what they are serving!  Thank you to Heather at Southern State of Mind for organizing us and inviting me to the party.
