The Delightful Home {Teen Boy Room}

I always love to start room tour posts with the journey of how they have evolved over time.  On move in day John’s room had stained blue carpet, dark wood train, an outdated ceiling fan and a popcorn ceiling.  In the plus column was the size, the two generous windows and the two closets.

From the time that Whit came out of his crib until last fall, the boys shared this room.  Whit had his own room right across the hall but they loved having each other’s company and I loved having them together.  Sweet boyhood memories were made here – I often heard them up way past bed time whispering, or even dragging Pokemon cards out of the closet, trying to not give themselves away.  But, they are growing up and were ready to move into their own spaces.

John’s top priorities were a big bed and a lounge space for his updated room.  We kept most of the furnishings and decor and worked together over the last (almost) year to fine tune his new tween room.  (Although he will be a veritable teen in a few months!)  Here’s how it looks today!

Sources:
Paint – Benjamin Moore Clay Beige (walls) and Benjamin Moore Alabaster (trim)
Floor – unstained white oak
Rug – Mod Cow FLOR carpet tiles (see how we did it here)

Back in the day, it was originally two rooms, but one of the previous owners took the wall down between.  It measures about 14’x24’ now!  Oh, how I wish I could talk to the original builder turned owner.  I’d love to hear more about our home’s history and the other two families that were raised here – I hear they had all boys and that my two are numbers 11 and 12 raised here since 1964!

The bed was the hardest piece to find for the room as I wanted something sturdy and traditional that I’d have long after John has moved out and he wanted something that he liked.  We agreed on the Jourdan Bed from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child.  He loved the twin sized Southern Tide Sheets he had previously so we just ordered them in a queen.  I’ve had them on their beds for years and they washed and held up well so I was happy to buy them again.  After much research, we ended up with the Zinus Memory Foam Mattress  and  Zinus Smart Box Spring.  The kid is also picky about his pillows and LOVES these  luxury gel pillows.

The quilts, duvets and euro shams are all from their original twin sized bed from Pottery Barn.  The ikat dot pillows were also off of their beds, originally made by Mother.  She made the monogrammed throw pillow from fabric remnants I held on to after we made the curtains years ago.  We also kept the little mirrors from One Fish Two Fish in Savannah and the reading lights from Pottery Barn.  The crab painting is by Catherine Lovett and was in Whit’s room until he said it was “too scary”.  John was happy to have it.

The little side table was always in the room and is from Target.   I love its size and pop of color.

The gallery wall is another thing that didn’t change, other than swapping out a few pictures every now and then.  The frames are Ribba from Ikea and are my go-to for gallery walls.  You can see all of my Gallery Wall Tips & Tricks here.

The antique dresser was the first piece of furniture I purchased for John’s nursery thirteen years ago. The fish painting is by the darling Catherine Lovett of Savannah (same as the crab).  Mother and I made the curtains years ago from Robert Allen Linen Duck with Towers by Premier Prints on the trim.  The bamboo shades are from JC Penney and the curtain rods are from Home Goods.  John played the cello in 6th grade orchestra and will continue next year!  I cannot lie… this instrument doesn’t see a whole lot of action at home.  When it does, it is almost always at 11 PM…. and wakes up the house.  He uses this ghost chair to practice, and we have the same style in our office.

John opted to keep a desk space in his room, even though he tends to do more homework while lounging than sitting upright.  :-)  This was Mother’s desk as a child, then my desk as a child, and was passed down to John a few years ago.  The gorgeous fish painting is by Angie Reuter.  She’s a very special lady to John, so he likes having her work in his room.  The LED desk lamp was compliments of Lamps Plus – John chose it himself and I love it’s sleek design!!  I found the display clip board at Target and swap it out for him every now and then.  You can find The Greatest Showman Free Printables in this post.

Without a doubt, the new lounge area is John’s favorite thing about his room update.  The sofa folds out to a twin sized bed for guests and is from West Elm.  The bean bag chair is from Pottery Barn Teen.  We chose the Acrylic Waterfall Table because he thought it was cool and I liked that nobody could harm themselves on it and it didn’t visually take up any space in the room.  The Accordian Side Table is from Urban Outfitters.

We moved the bookcase over to the fall wall to round out the lounge space.  He carefully chose items to display and I did a whole post on How to Style Bookshelves here.

I love this little remnant of his nursery.  Sister gave it to me before he was even born.

You can find many more details about specific items and projects in the room in these posts:

I hope you enjoyed this peek into the *almost* teen room.  It was a lot of fun to put together!

  1. I love it! Especially how you styled the Banshee! I’ve been trying to figure out a way to display my sons:)

  2. I’d like to make a reservation. Please put me down for a long weekend, preferably when your darling parents are in town, the week after John leaves for Tech. I’m quiet, love to cook and am a neat freak. Yours truly, Jane ;-)

    1. Oh man, a Zara. HA. Thank you so much for the follow up!!! I am saving the Hamilton book for our New York trip. :-)

  3. I love the carpet squares! They turned out great. Where is the brass floor lamp from? The one by the couch.
