Adventures by Disney {Germany Day 3: Munich}

Our third day started much like the others, with our complimentary breakfast at the hotel.  The Hotel VierJahreszeiten Kempinski München has been wonderful!  After breakfast, we were off for the day.  The majority of the group (adults) headed to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.  The travelers with children under the age of 14 spent the morning at the Science Museum.

DACHAU CONCENTRATION CAMP MEMORIAL SITE

After breakfast we boarded our motor coach with our Adventure Guide and local guide to make the 30 minute drive to Dachau.

Dachau was the very first concentration camp and the model for thousands to follow.  Approximately 300,000 men were enslaved here and 32,000 died.  This number is so low, and I say that understanding how harsh it sounds, only because Dachau was a work camp for men, not a termination camp.  In the early years, Dachau was primarily populated with political offenders and the prisoners were sent away to other camps to die.  While it was the first to open, it was the next to last to be liberated.  Over the course of twelve horrid years, humans were starved, tortured, beaten and killed at Dachau.

It was an emotional and important morning and, while I have learned about the Holocaust in history books and fiction books and tv and movies and documentaries and even at the Holocaust Museum, I was not prepared for this and my comprehension of the horror had only scratched the surface.  This experience, and having a guide to navigate the site, was something I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to do and a morning that will never, ever leave me.

Only guard yourself and guard your soul carefully, lest you forget the things your eyes saw, and lest these things depart your heart all the days of your life, and you shall make them known to your children, and your children’s children.  Deuteronomy 4:9

Dachau does not allow visitors under the age of 14.  They do have an audio tour, but I strongly recommend using an experienced guide for the full experience.

BREWERY VISIT, BEER TASTING AND LUNCH

We were treated to a fabulous lunch at Weihenstephan, the oldest still operating brewery in the world, founded in 725!!  Our traditional German meal was delicious and I found my favorite dish of all – Spaetzle.  At the end of the meal, we were enjoyed a beer tasting.  I especially loved this experience because it was just far enough outside of the city that I probably wouldn’t have planned it on my own.

ST. PETER’S CLOCK TOWER

Back in Munich, we had a few hours on our own.  Kaleigh and I don’t let grass grow under our feet and were off to explore.  This time, we climbed the 300 stairs to the top of St. Peter’s Clock Tower.  We had incredible views of the city from the observation platform that offered 360 degree viewing.  If you could time it right, this would be an epic place to watch the Glockenspiel show.

DINNER AT HOFBRAUHAUS

We ended our last night in Munich with a festive dinner at the world-famous and historic beer hall and restaurant Hofbrauhaus.  We dined on traditional Bavarian fare, drank beer,  and thoroughly enjoyed the music and performances.  It was a wonderful way to bid farewell to Munich!!

ADVENTURES BY DISNEY PINS

Our Disney pin for today was a simple reminder of our morning at Dachau.  Just a white rose that says In Remembrance.  <3

  1. I visited Dachau last summer with my then 14 year old son. It still brings tears to my eyes remembering. The day we were there it was raining and miserable. All I could think of was how blessed I was and how my discomfort was a drop in the ocean compared to what those prisoners endured. It’s such an important experience to pass on to future generations.

  2. You are capturing it all so wonderfully! It’s making me miss the pretzels for breakfast, incredible food, delicious beer and all the pristine villages, restaurants and darling buildings. Germany is very special in so many ways. Sehr schon! ?????? And, what about their potatoes and saptzel?! That is so true!!?

  3. Thank you very much for sharing your trip to Munich and the other sights of Germany. I was born in Munich but have not been back for 42 years…My father met my mother when he was in the Army stationed in Wurzburg and they were married shortly after meeting. I have been a full-time caretaker for my parents for 3 1/2 years now…my father (83) was diagnosed with bladder cancer and my mother (81) shortly after with dementia. My mother still can speak her native german and does still talk about her difficult experiences growing up during the war. All the men in the family were sent to war which included her grandfather and uncles…she lost her Dad to the war at age 7. I will be sharing the pictures with her of the wonderful red tile roofs and beautifully kept flower boxes!!! May the rest of your stay in Germany be WUNDERBAR!!!
