Remembering 9/11

I don’t think most adult Americans will ever wake up on September 11 and not remember the events that unfolded seventeen years ago.  I was at work in downtown Atlanta at Coke and it was terrifying.  We were all gathered around the tv in the conference room on the 11th floor trying to make sense of the horror.  In that moment, coworkers and leaders and interns and strangers and maintenance workers on my floor all became one.  Our roles and titles were stripped away and we were just scared humans.  Americans.

We will be visiting the 9/11 Museum in New York later this year.  I hope this will help my boys take the day from  a chapter or a paragraph in a history book to an actual event that Americans suffered through, learned from and grew stronger by.

Today I was volunteering in Whit’s classroom when the school had a moment of silence.  He still doesn’t really know what happened on 9/11.  Even his teacher, who was only in first grade seventeen years ago, remembers the day vividly.

Where were you on September 11, 2001?

Finally, for all of those in the path of the storm, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families.  Stay safe and please heed evacuation warnings.  Getting my parents to leave is always like pulling teeth.  <3

  1. I agree… this day will never go by without remembering that day in 2001.

I was just getting to work as the first news reports were coming in, and remember thinking that America would never be the same. ?

  2. In Canada we watched in horror and disbelief what was happening to our American neighbours.

I was in my second year of university in Ontario and our campus was closed not long after the news broke. Our university prepped all available spaces to take in travellers from a displaced flight that was headed for NYC and re-routed to Canada.

    1. I will always remember how Canada took in flights that could not land and took care of them for days until the flights began again. America will appreciate our neighbor forever.
