Wanderlust {Vancouver, BC}

Last week I shared that we are headed to Alaska in 2019, and y’all were so sweet to chime in with all of your favorites from your own vacations.  Well, we plan to do a 3 night pre-stay in Vancouver prior to the cruise and I’m back today to ask for your input on things to see and do during our visit.

I’ve pretty much decided on staying at The Rosewood Hotel Georgia, as it is one in my network of luxury hotel brands and has a great price during our trip dates.  (If you’re headed that way, I’m happy to provide a quote and share my exclusive benefits with you!)

So now, we need to figure out how to spend our time!!  Right now we are thinking of doing a Stanley Park Bike Tour and visiting the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain.  But, I am wide open for other suggestions and tips and tricks on the best ways to get those done.  We also have the Cactus Club Cafe and Jam Cafe on our list for eats.

  • Where should we eat?
  • What do we HAVE to see / do?
  • What should we skip?
  • What are your best tips?
  • Are there any particular city tours you would recommend?

As y’all know, we love adventure, history, and a good meal!  Thank you for ALWAYS sharing the best ideas for our travels!

  1. Skip the aquarium, it’s not worth the cost for the small size. Have donuts/coffee at Tim Horton’s. Boston Pizza is a favorite. They have two Lauderee’ locations, which is a Paris based bakery with THE BEST macarons. Vancouver is a fun city.

  2. The Hotel Georgia is quite dark, stuffy and old fashioned. Just saying… There are better places to stay for that $.

The food halls at Granville Island are a must. Afterwards, have lunch or dinner directly across the street at Edible Canada. The food is interesting, locally inspired and excellent. The boys will love it. You can easily cycle there from cycling around Stanley Park counterclockwise.

I second the Tim Horton’s suggestion. Their doughnut holes are delicious!

Lastly, I’d suggest checking out the Yaletown district. It kind of reminds me of Boston and has a nice feel with all kinds of restaurants and shops.

  3. The Granville Island Market is a pretty neat place to grab a bite. Queen Elizabeth park is beautiful. I also recommend the Museum of Anthropology. There is a lot of indigenous (First Nations) history in that area, and the museum would be a good introduction for your boys. A bike ride around Stanley Park is a great idea! Also, be on the lookout for British items in the supermarket & stores. It’s fun to see the British influence there.

Vancouver is one of my favorite cities – it’s so beautiful there!

  4. Granville Island is a fun spot for browsing their indoor market and trying out a variety of foods. If the weather is nice, it’s fun to sit outside and “people watch.” I second the suggestion to visit a Tim Horton’s.

  5. Tim Horton’s is a MUST DO! I grew up eating it and now that I live much farther south I miss it so much! It’s the best coffee ever. You need to try an Iced Capp, their signature drink!
    Have fun, Vancouver is stunning.
    xx

  6. I vote for a day trip to Victoria, which is on Vancouver Island. It’s a beautiful, walkable town with great little restaurants, shopping, and water views. The highlight is Butchart Gardens. It is amazing! Also, the ferry ride over was smooth and an enjoyable ride.

No matter what you do, you are going to love BC!

  7. I’m not a coffee drinker and have never been to Vancouver but, having said that, when we go to Nova Scotia, the first thing my hubby does is start guzzling Tim Horton’s coffee. He says it is truly the best!

  8. Truthfully, we didn’t love Vancouver and had a hard time finding things to do there. We much preferred Victoria (the bus tour was interesting), and we loved Butchart Gardens.

I will chime in and say Granville Island is worth a stop – the market was fun to browse, and the food was great. My Harry Potter fans loved the broom shop and begged to take one home. One of the bus routes will drop you off to take a free water boat ride across to Granville Island and the boys really enjoyed that. They also enjoyed the big Capilano suspension bridge place. Be warned though it was super crowded and while interesting isn’t something we’d do again.

We’ve heard the pocket parks on the north west side of the city are awesome to explore if you enjoy nature. Lots of critters (starfish, etc), trapped in the tide pools very similar to some of the beaches in northern Washington State.
