Salty and Sweet Chex Mix Recipes

For this year’s neighbor gifts I made both sweet and salty Chex mixes at different times in the last couple of weeks.

Daddy O’s Original Chex Party Mix (v4)

Since Daddy-O makes us big bags of his special mix every year, I’ve never made it myself. We had a bowl or two and bagged the rest for neighbors but, it was just as tasty as his if I do say so myself. :-) He honed his recipe over the years – he’s been making it for as long as I can remember. He studied all the dregs that Sister and I left behind and, as you might note, his v4 recipe does not have some of the usual suspects – peanuts or wheat chex. Haha! It’s just the way Sister and I love it and there is never a scrap left.

(This pic is of the bags my parent’s made to give to their friends. I forgot to take a pic of mine before delivering them to neighbors.)

  • 8 tablespoons butter (1 stick)
  • 6 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 6 cups corn Chex®
  • 6 cups rice Chex®
  • 3 cups nuts
  • 1-1/2 cups mixed nuts (without peanuts)
  • 1-1/2 cups cashew nuts
  1. Preheat oven to 275°
  2. In microwaveable measuring cup, slowly melt butter (cover with wax paper). Stir in seasonings. Place cereals and nuts in large bowl and gradually stir in butter/seasonings until evenly coated. Divide mix into 2 large (12”x16”x2-1/2”) aluminum roasting pans. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on paper towel covered newspaper to cool. Store in airtight containers (or Ziploc bags).

Yield: About 24 servings (1/2 cup each)

Notes: When baking the mix, I place one pan on the upper shelf and one on the lower shelf of the oven. I have a small over. I rotate the pans from each shelf when stirring the mix, each 15 minutes.

More Notes: When used, I use mixed nuts without peanuts. For y’all, when I can afford it, I like to use mostly pistachio nuts and macadamia nuts, but will sometimes include almonds, cashews, and/or pecans. Never peanuts. There are some mixed nuts that have combinations of almonds/pecans or cashews/almonds.

Hints: I buy 4 large (12”x16”x2-1/2” approx.) aluminum roasting pans at Dollar Tree. I use 2 pans for each batch. I can have one batch in the oven, while preparing the next batch. I usually buy 3 large boxes of Corn Chex and 3 large boxes of Rice Chex. I buy the mixed nuts and cashew nuts at COSTCO, or Sam’s. When coating the mix with the butter/seasonings, pour over the back of a spoon, for more even coating. For storing and giving, I’ll make of gallon bags for the family and individual quart bags for each family member.

Snickerdoodle Chex Mix

General Mills sent me the recipe and ingredients for the Snickerdoodle Chex Mix and it was really quite good! We will definitely make this one again.

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups Cinnamon Chex™ cereal
  • 2 cups Chocolate Chex™ cereal
  • 4 cups popped popcorn
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  1. In small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside. In large microwavable bowl, mix cereals and popcorn.
  2. In 1-cup microwavable measuring cup, microwave butter uncovered on High about 40 seconds or until melted. Pour over cereal mixture, stirring until evenly coated.
  3. Microwave uncovered on High 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. Sprinkle half of the sugar mixture evenly over cereal mixture; stir. Sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture; stir. Microwave 1 minute longer. Spread on waxed paper or paper towels to cool. Store in airtight container.

Speaking of Daddy-O, we’ve safely made it down South for the holiday. I love being home so, so much!

  1. Chex mix is my favorite, favorite treat – if my Mama makes it. Mine never turns out! Fortunately, she always has some ready for me this time of year. xo

  2. The snack mix sounds great. But what I really want is the scoop on those oh-too-adorable monogrammed labels on the bag! Please do tell! (Or sell them in your Etsy store). Merry Christmas!!!

    1. Thank you! I sold them in my store the last few years but not this year. Hoping to open in early 2019 with Valentine’s, St. Pats and Easter things!

  3. Hooray for Chex Mix…and NOT the “fake” recipe they try to pawn off.?
I also make the real deal and finished my annual Chex Mix Madness this week…six gallons! (In Zip-locks for shipping. Hello Daddy-O!)

I hope Sister feels better soon…my recent round of it lasted too long. Keep drinking Harney teas and get some Manuka honey.

Have a wonderful day. Thank you for the tour of home!!! I am now going to settle in and enjoy it. ❤?

  4. PS

Your recipe looks wonderful!! I think I’ll make it for Valentine’s Day boxes.

I was referring to the “original” recipe they print.?

Please tell Miss Marme how much I enjoy her instagram photos, as well as The Countess of Cookery.

  5. I’ve given this alot (too much!😉) thought and I do believe I am going to eliminate all peanuts! 👏 That’s a great idea!
