Broken Harts

Markis, Hannah, Devonte, Abigail, Jeremiah, and Sierra Hart—six black children, ranging in age from 12 to 19—were adopted by Sarah and Jennifer Hart, both white. On Jen’s Facebook page, it looked as if they were the perfect blended family, even earning the nickname “Hart Tribe” from friends. Then, on March 26, 2018, the family’s GMC Yukon was found belly-up on the rocks below California’s Highway 1. The news of the murder-suicide shocked their friends and made national headlines, leaving many wondering what possibly led to the fatal crash. The story is beyond tragic, but the double persona between the Facebook page and real life are shocking and eye opening. You really can’t believe everything you read on the internet. The entire series is now available.

Cold

Susan Powell vanished on Dec. 7, 2009. Her body has never been found. From the beginning, West Valley City, Utah police suspected Susan’s husband, Josh Powell, had murdered her. They never arrested him. COLD dives deep into the case files, uncovering never-before-heard details. You’ll learn why Susan stayed with an abusive husband, why Josh did what he did and how the justice system failed Susan and her two boys. This one is also unbelievably tragic, but what makes it so fascinating is that many of the key players were avid journalists – both on paper, digitally and even on video/voice recordings – so you hear their voice and their words for all the years that this story was unfolding. The entire series on this one is also now available.

Over My Dead Body

Dan and Wendi are two good-looking attorneys whose wedding is featured in the New York Times. But when this “perfect” couple falls apart, it leads to a bad breakup, a worse divorce, and a murder case involving a menagerie of high-priced lawyers and unexpected co-conspirators. This one is really interesting and it is turning out that they players involved are not the ones I originally expected!

Root of Evil

When Elizabeth Short, also known as The Black Dahlia, was brutally killed in 1947, it gripped the entire country. More than 70 years later, it remains America’s most infamous unsolved murder. Many believe Dr. George Hodel was the killer, thanks to an investigation by Hodel’s own son. But murder is just part of the Hodel family story, one filled with horrifying secrets that ripple across generations. Now, through never-before-heard archival audio and first-time interviews, the Hodel family opens up to reveal their shocking story. In this eight-part documentary series, sisters Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile, the great grand daughters of George Hodel, take a deep dive into their family history to try to figure out what really happened. This one had me HOOKED on the first episode and is absolutely worth adding to your play list!

The Fall Line

An investigative, narrative, and revealing show focused on the cold cases of marginalized communities in the Southeast. Hosted by a professor and licensed therapist, The Fall Line gives a platform to families and victims who have been passed over by mainstream media. I find this one particularly interesting because it is set primarily in Atlanta (and the Southeast) and discusses many Grady Hospital child abductions.

True Crime Brewery

Jill and Dick are a married couple who love to drink beer and discuss true crime. Join them at the quiet end of the bar. Dick will bring along an excellent beer from the region where the crime occurred. He will give us a little beer lesson and review before Jill starts off their true crime discussion. The discussions are well-researched and in depth. Dick is a physician and often shares his medical expertise at Jill’s urging. Gosh, I just love this one! Their stories are well articulated and thoroughly researched. This one is great because it is not a series you have to follow – I love to just pick one before a long walk or long drive.

Truth & Justice – The Melgars

The Truth & Justice Podcast is listener driven show, devoted to the pursuit of truth and justice. Host, Bob Ruff, investigates potential wrongful conviction and cold cases using a unique crowdsourcing approach. Truth & Justice is currently on Season 6, where Bob is asking for the help of the Truth & Justice Army to get to the bottom of the murder of Jaime Melgar. Jaime was murdered in his home in Houston, Texas in 2012. His wife, Sandy, was convicted for the crime. Bob believes the real killer is still out there. And, honestly, I do too. I’ve shared my love of Truth & Justice previously and continue to really enjoy season after season.

Up & Vanished

I’ve also previously shared Up & Vanished Season 1 -the unsolved disappearance of Georgia high school teacher and former pageant queen, Tara Grinstead. The 11-year-old case remains the largest case file in Georgia history and is still unfolding and I’ve recently picked it back up as Payne is covering the trial series.
