Oh the Places You’ll Go

I know most of us are not looking for one more thing to do this time of year, but when my boys started Kindergarten, I started having this book signed by their teachers at the end of the school year. I hope to fill it with sweet school memories straight through high school, and give it to them at their graduations.

I have not yet had a teacher that wasn’t happy to sign their book. For elementary school, I just sent it in a sealed envelope and emailed the teacher with a heads-up. They signed and sent it back home, with the boys none the wiser.

I really didn’t know if I’d get the courage to ask middle school teachers, or if they would even have the time to do it. In both 6th and 7th, I’ve sent very humble emails with a ton of “outs” and explained my little project to John’s two favorite teachers. They have honestly been so kind about it, and even flattered that I asked. Instead of trying to send a book back and forth, they have written on note cards and left them in the front office. I pick them up and then use double stick tape to add them to a book page.

I have a recurring calendar reminder each year to do this, so that it doesn’t slip through the cracks.

I can tell you that reading these at the end of the school years brings me so much joy – both in the fact that my kids are reportedly kind, happy and hard working AND that these teachers are willing to pour into them up until the very last day.

I think these will be wonderful surprises one day!

  1. I have a Dr Seuss book that I donfor my boys too, but was wondering what to do for my olderst’s first year of middle school this year… what a great idea! Thanks for sharing, as always I’m so inspired by your momming!

  2. Amanda,

What a wonderful keepsake for your sons to enjoy for the rest of their lives once presented. You are a thoughtful mother to think about gifts that will truly stand the test of time. Enjoy these years as they pass so quickly.

    1. Thank you so, so much. They seem to pick up pace – every year flies by quicker than the last.

  3. I’ve been doing this since pre-school, too. In middle school I just drop the book off at the office and pick it back up for 1 favorite teacher. Of course last year one of their little friends overheard me while she was hidden in the nurse’s office. I made her promise to keep my secret. LOL! I cry every year after reading their comments.

  4. This is my standard high school/college graduation gift, along with either a check or (for high school) the all important Chipotle gift card! Everyone loves their gift and looks at the verses From a brand new perspective. I love your idea, what a wonderful lifetime gift!
