On My Bedside {Sunset Beach}

Like she does every summer, Mother lent me the newest Mary Kay Andrews book to devour over vacation. She is one of my very favorite authors and I always look forward to her new releases.  Many of them are set in Savannah, Atlanta and the South and all are good for some laughs, maybe a few tears, a little romance and a lot of Southern humor.

Sunset Beach had all of the hallmarks of a Mary Kay Andrews book – a woman down on her luck, a charming beach town, and a frog that ends up turning into a prince. I didn’t adore the main characters, nor did I feel immersed in the charm of a slow, Southern beach town. I did, however, love the addition of a murder mystery. Overall, it wasn’t my favorite MKA book, but it was still enjoyable and a quick, easy read.

Drue Campbell’s life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried – to Drue’s eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job.
It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance – her grandparents’ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions.
With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her father’s firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may – or may not – involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: there’s a storm on the horizon.

I know we’ve all moved on to fall, school and holidays, but it doesn’t have to be summer to enjoy a beach read. Right?! I just finished Next Year in Havana and started When We Left Cuba. Reviews coming soon! My two favorite books this year are Where the Crawdads Sing and  The Storyteller’s Secret.

Let me know you’re reading.

  1. I look forward to an MKA book every summer. Loved Sunset Beach – the main character as well as the mystery that was solved. In fact I thought this one was reminiscent of a series she wrote with Callahan Garrity, I think, as the main character. I even suggested to MKA on her Facebook page that she write a follow up to this book!
