On My Bedside {Caroline: Little House Revisited}

Last month I read Caroline: Little House Revisited and loved every minute. I grew up on the Little House books and this one felt like a visit with old friends. It was particularly interesting to have read Laura’s stories of her childhood as a child, and then to read Ma’s side of the story as an adult and mother.

In this novel authorized by the Little House Heritage Trust, Sarah Miller vividly recreates the beauty, hardship, and joys of the frontier in a dazzling work of historical fiction, a captivating story that illuminates one courageous, resilient, and loving pioneer woman as never before—Caroline Ingalls, “Ma” in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved Little House books.

In the frigid days of February, 1870, Caroline Ingalls and her family leave the familiar comforts of the Big Woods of Wisconsin and the warm bosom of her family, for a new life in Kansas Indian Territory. Packing what they can carry in their wagon, Caroline, her husband Charles, and their little girls, Mary and Laura, head west to settle in a beautiful, unpredictable land full of promise and peril.

The pioneer life is a hard one, especially for a pregnant woman with no friends or kin to turn to for comfort or help. The burden of work must be shouldered alone, sickness tended without the aid of doctors, and babies birthed without the accustomed hands of mothers or sisters. But Caroline’s new world is also full of tender joys. In adapting to this strange new place and transforming a rough log house built by Charles’ hands into a home, Caroline must draw on untapped wells of strength she does not know she possesses.

If you read, watched and loved Little House on the Prairie, Caroline will be a heart warming, easy and interesting read for you! I did have a reader ask me if this book is appropriate for late elementary age and/or tweens and it is up until the end – around page 330 – so I’d read that part first and see what you think.

  1. Amanda this one has been on my TBR list. I was wondering if it is faithful to the orignal series or if there were new insights into Caroline. I have to admit that after I while I would have nailed Charles’ foot to the floor. He really never was satisfied it seemed to me. Reading the Little House books as an adult I see things differently than I did when I read them as a child.

  2. I will check this out! I enjoyed reading Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser; you might like that one, too, if you are a Little House fan!

  3. I didn’t know this book existed. I have read and re-read all the Little House books and try to pick up any supplements as they come out. But believe it or not, I only live a little over an hour from De Smet, SD, the Little Town on the Prairie, and I have never gone to the museum in town! Thanks for sharing.
