New Exterior Paint

We had planned for a few house projects this year long before coronavirus. While some of them have been tabled, painting the house was one we deemed “essential”. The house is made of cedar and requires more maintenance than maybe we should have signed up for. When we had it painted a few years ago, it seems they didn’t do their job in scraping, sanding and priming. Hence, we have some wood rot that is significant in a few places and entire sheets of paint falling off the house in other places.

Original Paint Colors / Exterior

Following are the original paint colors when we purchased the home. You can also see the lack of landscaping and old front porch.

Current Paint Colors

I have absolutely loved the paint colors I chose a few years back. Our exterior renovation has the most wow factor of anything we’ve done to the house, in my opinion! Following are the colors that we currently have.

New Paint Colors

I mulled over changing the colors or leaving them as is. I just hate to spend so much on a project and have the after look exactly the same as the before. Ha! Since I do love the colors I originally chose, I got a wild hair and tried painting them on the house in different places!

I started with the trim color on the siding. I’ve always loved a white house!

Then I tried the siding color on the shutters and I was already in love. No sense in looking further!

I definitely wanted to keep my blue door. I ended up bringing out the paint from the dining room and trying it here.

And here’s where I landed! I love that the colors are all ones I’ve used previously, BOTH inside and out.

The crew arrived today and started with pressure washing. Tomorrow they will start scraping and sanding. I imagine Friday will be wood repair and we probably won’t see paint until next week. Stay tuned!

Oh, and before I forget, I share a Puzzle of the Day on my Instagram. It’s been really popular over there so I figured I could put them here too. I hunt down a puzzle each day and write it out on paper. I place it on the kitchen counter and whoever finds it and solves it first gets a prize! You can find the puzzles and their answers on Instagram under my story highlight called happy home.

Hope you’re having a great week!

  1. Your house is going to look fabulous as usual. Thanks so much for the puzzles. My boys ask if I don’r put one up!

  2. Amanda,
Love your final choice of colors and cant wait to see the end result! We currently have BM Revere Pewter on our living room walls and its a beautiful warm greige color but if you don’t have much natural light in the room it can come off a little muddy looking.

Hope your have better results with this paint job than the last. Sounds like it wasn’t a defect in the paint but wasn’t sanded and prepped correctly if paint was peeling off in sheets.

  3. Can’t wait to see how the house turns out. Have you guys considered going to hardiplank? We need to repaint our trim and need to figure out what color it is. Getting a new color approved through our HOA is harder than getting something through Congress. I am so not looking forward to it, but have put it off about as long as I can. It’s looking pretty bad… :(

Had to give the puzzle a try. I am so bad at logic puzzles like that! Is it 042?

  4. Oh Amanda! I loved the other colors, but this is going to be so beautiful!!! Can’t wait to see the transformation!!! Please post some in progress pictures on Instagram. 😍😍😍

  5. I love how you’ve reworked the colors – so tasteful and serene. Can’t wait to see the finished product! xo
