On My Bedside {Eligible}

I was so excited when my neighbor loaned me her favorite book! I’d be excited to read anyone’s favorite book, truth be told. By the end of the first chapter, I was hooked on Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld!! It is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice and a fun, lighthearted easy read.

This version of the Bennet family—and Mr. Darcy—is one that you have and haven’t met before: Liz is a magazine writer in her late thirties who, like her yoga instructor older sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help—and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling and the family is in disarray.

Youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are too busy with their CrossFit workouts and Paleo diets to get jobs. Mary, the middle sister, is earning her third online master’s degree and barely leaves her room, except for those mysterious Tuesday-night outings she won’t discuss. And Mrs. Bennet has one thing on her mind: how to marry off her daughters, especially as Jane’s fortieth birthday fast approaches.

Enter Chip Bingley, a handsome new-in-town doctor who recently appeared on the juggernaut reality TV dating show Eligible. At a Fourth of July barbecue, Chip takes an immediate interest in Jane, but Chip’s friend neurosurgeon Fitzwilliam Darcy reveals himself to Liz to be much less charming. . . .

And yet, first impressions can be deceiving.

And now, it is confession time. I have never read Pride and Prejudice. I know, I know. It’s shameful. I loved Eligible so much that I was inspired to read Pride and Prejudice. I chose this beautiful version and was excited to dive in… Pride and Prejudice Puffin plated book.

I tried really, really hard to like it. Chapter after chapter and the words just swam around on the page. It was like a special kind of torture at the end of my day. I finally quit. I don’t think I’ve quit a book since… maybe ever?? Ha!

Have you read Eligible? Pride and Prejudice? Have you ever quit a book? Tell me!

  1. It absolutely is OK to quit a book you are not enjoying. Your time is limited, and there are likely countless things you want to do, make, read, watch, and learn. You simply do not have the time to torture yourself with things you think you “should” like. I used to never allow myself to quit books. A few years ago, I forced myself to read one to the very end, and then….I cried. Not because the story was profound, moving, life-affirming, or instructive. I cried because the ending was so STUPID and I wanted all of my time back! Now I quit if I’m not into it after the first 3-5 chapters.

  2. Noooo! I’m so sad to hear you didn’t enjoy! I have to tell you that I watched the Colin Firth version of P&P as a college student, and fell in love! The newer movie (Kiera Knightley) just doesn’t do the characters justice! After watching the older version several times, I read the book, and enjoyed it. I knew the characters & could picture them talking, and dressed in their fashionable, or not, clothing! Give the movie a chance on a rainy wknd when you can binge- it’s long! My girls & I love to watch together!💕

  3. My daughter is a big Jane Austen fan and I am a prolific reader, but I couldn’t get past the first or second chapter of Pride & Prejudice. But two authors I am loving these days are Elin Hilderbrand and Jodi Picoult. Have you read either of those authors. And another one you may like is Swan House by Elizabeth Musser–it’s a little slow in places but it’s historical fiction that covers civil rights in the 1960s and it all takes place in Buckhead, and of course you know where the Swan House is!! And based on your recommendation, I am ordering Eligible as a gift for my Jane Austen loving daughter.
