Celebrating Christmas 2020 {Santa Drive By + Cookie Exchange}

Our at home celebrations continue full steam ahead! I’m keeping Christmas magical if it’s the last thing I do. If only I could figure out how to get snow in Atlanta this week…. :-)

Monday night brought a visit from Santa in his sleigh….. er Jeep! A friend organized it for our neighborhood and it was absolutely darling. We tracked Santa’s progress all the way to our driveway. Now, you know my boys are wee bit past believing in Santa, although nobody has ever spoken those words aloud, but that doesn’t make it any less magical. I wish I had gotten a picture of Elsa in her Christmas jammies too but I was swept away in the whole thing!

Afterwards, we enjoyed cookies and milk!!

I put some thought into things we would miss this holiday season and one of them was the requisite cookie exchange. My boys eagerly look forward to me coming home with all sorts of sweets and treats every year after the one I attend with friends. I decided to just bring the party home. Why not?!

I could have spent hours baking dozens and dozens of cookies, but instead opted to buy out the Trader Joe’s. I put them on individual boards and we had a such a fun night critiquing them.

The crowd favorites were the gingerbread men and dark chocolate mint stars. Nobody finished their plate, so I slipped each board inside a gallon zip top to much on through the week. Zip tops labeled clearly with names, of course. No fighting at Christmas!

And, yes, I know this is a lot of sugar. And, no, I just don’t care at this point. Falalalalala.

These individual boards (SET OF 6 BAMBOO CUTTING BOARDS) are SO great and have been one of my favorite things about 2020. You can see another use of them here:

If you’re doing anything special or fun at home, particularly with teens, I’d love for you to share! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

  1. Here’s what we are doing with two teen daughters:
Land of Sweets Breakfast (gingerbread pancakes, coffee M & M’s, candy cane sprinkles) and Clara’s Christmas Eve Dream from Marquee TV
Chick Fil A Peppermint Milkshakes after soccer match with Christmas music on the way
NYCB Nutcracker also on Marquee TV with the dozen assortment of holiday cupcakes from a local bakery
Pizza (tree shaped from Southern Living instagram) and Christmas Vacation movie
Making hot chocolate bombs (stole your idea!) and making the hot chocolates to drink the next day while looking at Christmas lights
Neighborhood luminaria with Dollar Tree light up Christmas bulb light necklaces
    Cookie Baking day

  2. I’m pretty sure my now 13 year old still believes and it brings me to tears every time I think about it. When he was 8 he told Santa at the mall all he wanted for Christmas that year was his baby brother. Who arrived via Santa’s sleigh Christmas morning while everyone was sleeping.

We’ve been eating all the sugar and watching all the movies this year.

  3. I love all your ideas to make Christmas special this year. I am trying…my daughters are 27 and 24… but they get into it as well. Love the boards. Just ordered. I am going to do a breakfast chartuterie (sp) board with bagels, bacon, fruit, spreads and this way each person can have their own. Love them. Thank you for all you do to inspire and excite. Btw, hot chocolate bombs are no where to be found. xoxo

  4. We print a copy of your holiday lights checklist and use it as a scavenger hunt in our neighborhood! We take off in 2 golf carts (one teen driver and 1 adult to assist in each cart) and we race around the hood at 15-20 mph🤣 looking for the lights. We did use cars on one particularly cold year. The speed limit is pretty low in most neighborhoods too. The assistant in each cart checks the list and takes pics as proof. There is another person (the judge) at home base waiting for the first team to show up first with all their boxes checked and matching iPhone pictures as proof. I’ve always wanted to thank you because your checklist along with a former youth group excursion sparked the idea. We started the year my oldest son could drive and now it’s a favorite tradition each new driver in our house looks forward to! We have so much fun with it!!
