In the Blink of an Eye

In the blink of an eye, we went from the Diego Car…

to the Radio Flyer…

to playing in the front seat of Daddy’s brand new jeep…

… to the driver’s seat!!!

Clear the roads, Atlanta, we’ve got a newly minted fifteen year old with a learner’s permit burning a hole in his pocket!

After three hours at the DMV, where literally every cliche was in action (the power even went out), this kid drove me (part of the way) home! It was white knuckles the whole way.

Which, Mother seems to think is some sort of karma… :-)

Learning to drive for me included many, many mishaps. I can’t go into details because judgement is harsh on the internet these days, but bumpers, a family of ducks, and being left on the side of the road by own father were all involved. Me teaching someone to drive is a little like the blind leading the blind.

So far, John seems much more level headed and confident. It’s surreal to reverse these roles, where my life is suddenly in the hands of a teenager. Wish us luck, y’all!

  1. Dear Amanda, I imposed a self-ban on teaching my children to drive, and left it all to my much calmer husband, LOL! I only allowed myself in the car with them once they no longer mounted footpaths and had close calls with stationary objects! Congratulations to John, and to you for having a steady enough hand to take the photo! LOL again!

  2. Scary, isn’t it? We’re a little more lax here in South Dakota, and Sophie has had her restricted permit for a few months now. I will say, the times I drive with her, she seems very level headed, which is reassuring. But it’s so hard to put our little sweeties behind the wheel!!

  3. Private driving lessons proved to be the answer for my mom, me, and my daughters. No wrecks, no scratches, and it didn’t matter anyway because it was someone else’s car. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when my son-in-law is convinced he can teach the granddaughters to drive.

  4. I still think the bravest thing I ever did as a mom of 4 was to let someone I gave birth to, drive me around while they were learners. Thank goodness for their calm, nothing phases him, father! I’ll alert my now grown daughters who live in the Atlanta area to beware! You’ll survive.
