On My Bedside {The Sanatorium}

Coming on the heels of Home Before Dark, another FABULOUS read in the mystery thriller genre was The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse. I devoured this book on Spring Break. I loved the characters and that The Sanatorium was a character on its own right. The author (her debut novel!) transported me to another time and place and I was completely invested in her tale.

You won’t want to leave. . . until you can’t.

Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel.

An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin’s taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.

Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge–there’s something about the hotel that makes her nervous. And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her. With the storm closing off all access to the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic.

Elin is under pressure to find Laure, but no one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she’s the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they are all in. . .

As always, I want to know what has captured your attention! I went on a Netflix binge and now I’m back to books.

  1. My book club meets tonight to discuss Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik, but the book I most recently finished and loved is This Is How it Always is by Laurie Frankel. I am currently reading The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates.

  2. Your description of “The Sanatorium” sounds like a great book filled with mystery and suspense. For some reason, mysteries have never been my favorite read but I need to break out of my regular routine (romance novels) and give this one a chance.

    Its funny because the first thing I thought about when you were talking about the book was a former mental facility located in my home state of Virginia (Western State) that closed some years ago. It sat empty for a long time and looked quite spooky and scary with over-grown ivy growing up the walls of the large facility. A few years ago, someone bought the building and made a upscale boutique hotel out of it. I told my husband I wasn’t sure if this is a place that I could ever consider staying at because of its history.

    1. Oh wow! Yes, I’m not sure I could relax there either. One of the most popular hotels in Savannah was a funeral parlor for eons.

  3. Sounds so good! I’ve been in a reading lull myself, but have some good ones coming up. Most recently I finished The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August.
