Celebrating Christmas 2022 {Seeing Santa}

2022 marked our seventeenth year of heading down to Phipps Plaza to see the quintessential Atlanta Santa! I know it’s a little ridiculous that we still do this, but the boys completely humor me. And, believe it or not, every year we are not the oldest kids in line. :-)

We always head down over Thanksgiving break and it feels like the official kickoff to Christmas for our family! Like always, he handed them candy canes as he said “Brush your teeth, say your prayers, and have a Merry Christmas!”

I think I am about ready to call it a wrap on this tradition, to be honest, but I’ve done it for sooooo long I don’t know how to quit. LOL. I tried to explain the predicament to the family and they looked at me like I have three heads. “Mom, you just don’t make an appointment.” I am one of those people that loves the first of the year, the first of the month, Mondays, years in increments of five. I know… I’m weird. Alas, I think next year will be our last.

We used to go ride the Pink Pig at Macy’s back in the day, but when they (quite literally) outgrew that, I started taking them to dinner after Santa at Maggiano’s. It’s so yummy and festive at Christmas and they boys love it. We did just that this year, and Mother and Daddy-O came along for the fun.

It was a Merry Thanksgiving, indeed.

  1. Don’t stop! Emily Giffin, the author, lives in ATL and still have her kids go every year. Her twins are in their first year of college and she is still going this year:)

    1. Awww I love that! Honestly, there are always kids their age and older in line!! It’s neat how families keep going every year.

  2. The fact that you have gotten your boys (now young men) to take a Santa photo for that long is a Christmas miracle in itself! It’s always a little sad as our children outgrow some traditions but it sounds like they have been really good sports about it and are sweet enough to do it for so long. Of course, dinner at Maggiano’s isn’t a bad reward…lol.

  3. Amanda, your boys are so precious for humoring you with Santa visits this long. You’ve obviously raised two sweeties that love and adore their beautiful Momma! :-) Now, I’m going to try to get my boys to do the same. Haha! On a serious note, I’d love for you to do an updated post on tween/teen places to purchase cute/preppy boys clothes. My boys have almost outgrown the places you have mentioned on your previous boy-clothes posts. Thank you! Merry Christmas to you four!!!

      1. Yes, PLEASE! My son is Whit’s age, but he’s built like your John! I need to know where to find clothes for a long, lean young man!! Lol

  4. Yes to the Pink Pig and the Festival of Trees! Sadly we moved to Montgomery before the Pink Pig stopped and we started a new tradition is seeing “live” reindeer at their mall. Loved the Pink Pig, Rich’s, riding MARTA to the downtown area so much fun.

  5. I’m a Monday, first of the month, etc., person, too! We never did the Phipps Santa, but my sister did, and we always met her family down there and headed over to Lenox for the Pink Pig. Miss those days! Hers have all graduated HS now ~ not sure what was the last year they had their pictures made. May have been the oldest’s sophomore year of college! My youngest is the age of your oldest so I’m soaking up all of these lasts that have already started.
